Convoy Passes Through Morris en Route to Camp McCoy
The 1st 106th Cavalry 33rd Armored Division paused on Illinois 47 at the river bridge for about 40 minutes Friday afternoon while passing Morris on the way to Camp McCoy Wisconsin. The 126 unit convoy left Danville at 6 a.m. and stopped at Grundy County fairgrounds Mazon for lunch. They crossed the Illinois River Bridge around 2 p.m. and planned to spend Friday night in Rockford before arriving at Camp McCoy Saturday morning.

Fire Engulfs Abandoned House on Main Street
Firefighters found a locked front door and broke a second floor window to enter the abandoned two story home at 820 E Main St. A section of the floor burned near the stairs but overall damage was minor. The house owned by Lawrence Kenney is one of three the city plans to demolish as a public hazard. Trooper Jack O Hagan, who lives nearby, reported the smoke. A disordered abandoned trailer sat behind the house.

Six Firemen Hurt in West Side Lumber Yard Blaze
A West Side lumber yard fire at Western Lumber Co. injured six Chicago firefighters. Pawnee man killed in Dwight crash near bridge abutment
Darel Ray Givens, 24, of Pawnee died Friday when his car struck a bridge abutment at Illinois 17 and U.S. 66 near Dwight. His vehicle then bounced into the car of Leonard J. Sweig, 44, of St. Louis, who was unhurt.
