Judy Garland Dies in London Home After Sudden Illness

London AP reports singer Judy Garland, 47, died Sunday in her London bathroom. Scotland Yard ruled out foul play. autopsy scheduled. Surgeon Dr Phillip Lebon cited cirrhosis and noted she lived on borrowed time. Garland, born Frances Gumm, starred in The Wizard of Oz and endured a career marked by highs and personal struggles.

Carbon Hill Homecoming Charged With Festivities This Week

The Carbon Hill Homecoming runs Wednesday to Sunday with a parade and fireworks to close. More than 40 000 people are expected as the village board funds sewer and water repairs from carnival side shows and sports. Old Timers Day features a tent and Hoosier State Shows will operate 12 carnival rides on the fairway. Teenage dances occur nightly and a packed schedule lists softball, band concerts, donkey baseball, soccer matches, a parade, pony league baseball, sky divers, machinists versus motors, and a late fireworks finale.

Braceville Grade School extension financing advances as voters approve a $95,000 loan repayment plan by 134 to 106. The measure, defeated 1- vote on April 19, funds a six room and all purpose room addition to Braceville Grade School.

Weekend temps hold at 75 with 59 degree lows

The Collins Weather Station recorded 75 high and 59 low with a trace of precipitation. Tonight remains mainly cloudy with a chance of brief showers and upper fifties. Tuesday and beyond show a warming trend with possible showers and highs around 70 to 82. Noon Morris reads 60.

Board Approves Eight County Appointments

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved eight appointments to county committees including Dr. John Roth to the Tuberculosis Committee and Atty. David F. Root and Edwin Burnham to the Planning Commission. Chair pro tem Burl Gonnam announced a list of new election judges for September and noted continued use of current judges for the upcoming primary and November delegate elections. The board accepted a 50 year ordinance from Commonwealth Edison for electrical lighting and referred the tuberculosis care budget to the finance committee.

Three Injured In Accident Near Dwight

A three car crash on U.S. 66 near Dwight at 8 a m Sunday left three people injured. Juanita Naiboch 50 of Peoria sustained a fractured leg and is in fair condition at Morris Hospital. William Naiboch 49, her husband, is not injured. R C Lee 21 of Milwaukee driver of another vehicle is in fair condition under observation. Betty Handford 18 of Milwaukee, a passenger in the Lee car, was treated and released. Naiboch was ticketed for improper lane usage.

Tornadoes Kill 6 in Missouri Area Near Farmington

Six people died and more than 30 were injured in Missouri lead mining belt tornadoes southwest of St. Louis. Among the dead was William F. Betterton a 41 year old Southern Illinois University music professor. Other victims included Roy Pratt and his son Francis and two Herbst brothers. Hospitals treated about 35 people for minor injuries.

Arrest 23 Youths in Beer Party Case Near Dresden Lock

Twenty three area youths appeared slated for magis trate court next Monday after a beer party on the north bank of the Illinois River at the Dresden Lock around 11 p m Saturday. Charged with disorderly conduct are a list of teenagers and young adults from Minooka Joliet Channahon and Rockdale with sheriff s deputies posting no bond.

Former Resident Killed by Newark

A 12 year old Yorkville girl was injured in a crash on Friday near Newark and two local residents were killed. The remaining details indicate the incident left the girl in serious condition. Local authorities are investigating the fatal crash and identifying those involved.

Two Women Die in I 55 Crash Near Wilmington

Two Chicago women Miss Juanita Walz 23 and Miss Suzanne Kirby 25 were killed in a one car crash on Interstate 55 at the Blodgett Road overpass north of Wilmington Will County. The Chevy II left the left lane center median pillar and was demolished with bodies removed after about 45 minutes. Walz copywriter for Hechtman Advertising Co. Fire claims life of Stanley Torkelson in Manhattan blaze

A fatal early morning fire at a State St apartment in Manhattan killed 55 year old Stanley Torkelson who served as a caretaker. Four residents and two firefighters were injured while the blaze, started around 4 23 am, caused extensive damage and required rescue efforts by the Manhattan and East Joliet Fire units. Funeral plans set for Channahon native with ties to Morris.

Swift Action On Motorist Hodges Sentenced In Diamond Crash

Vernon L. Hodges 30 of Wilmington received 60 days in Vandalia magistrate court after a 1:15 a.m. collision on Illinois 113 at Dewey Street in Diamond. Hodges sideswiped Carl W. Pickerill 28 of Joliet driving a 1959 Buick east. Deputy Walter White arrested Hodges and charged leaving the scene, DUI, and no license. Hodges paid 100 plus 10 plus 13 costs for DUI and 40 plus 10 for leaving the scene.
