Five firms chosen to build electric cars nationwide

The Energy Department launched a first mass demonstration with five firms in four states to prove battery powered vehicles are practical. Critics from the Center for Auto Safety warned the plan lowers safety by setting too low an acceleration standard of zero to 31 mph in 15 seconds. The program will cost about 4 million dollars to fund 200 vehicles, service centers, and detailed maintenance records to spur adoption and data collection. Vehicles include full electric or hybrid models meeting federal standards with 31 mile all electric or 124 mile hybrid ranges.
