Two Men Die After Submarine Rescue Off Key West

Rescuers confirmed two men in the rear chamber of the 21 foot Johnson Sea Link minisub were dead after 31 hours underwater near Key West. Clayton Link and Albert Stover had been unconscious since Monday morning as the sub was freed from wreckage of the destroyer Fred T. Berry.

Variable cloudiness today with showers and thunderstorms likely. High in the lower 80s. Partly cloudy and cooler tonight with a chance of showers. Low around 60. Wednesday looks partly cloudy and cooler with a high in the mid 70s. Monday reached 85 at Dresden Island Lock and Dam with a 62 low. At 7 am the temperature was 62 and downtown Morris reported 72 at 10:30 am. Precipitation was 0.5 inches.

AEC Sets July 9 Hearing Start for Edison Nuclear Plant

The Atomic Energy Commission Board schedules July 9 as the start of an environmental hearing on Commonwealth Edison’s proposed 600 million nuclear plant and cooling lake near Seneca and Marseilles. The panel plans a two week continuous hearing with a pre hearing conference July 2 in Chicago. About 100 observers attend as Joe Karagonis seeks postponements and more data. Edison counters delays.

Flash Flood Watch Follows Severe Illinois Storms

Severe weather swept central and southern Illinois with thunderstorms tornadoes and high winds. Bloomington saw 1.5 inches of rain while Quincy drenched with over 5 inches in 24 hours and Springfield topped 2 inches. a flash flood watch remained for Fulton County on the Spoon River as cooler air moved in.

Luehrs Carnival Returns to Morris Summer Festival

The Luehrs Show returns to Morris for a June 26 to 30 festival at the Morris Fire Department. It marks the fourth consecutive year with H. W. Hub Luehrs and family running family friendly entertainment. Ten to twelve rides and multiple concession stands will be set up at the Morris Community High School lot. Advance tickets are four for one dollar through Monday. Firemen plan door to door outreach Wednesday night. Concession requests should contact Pete Muffler at 942-0660.

Dismissal in ethics suit against Cook County official

A Cook County Circuit Court dismissed an ethics suit seeking to oust Commissioner William N. Erickson for late filing of his statement. Judge F Emmett Morrissey rejected the notion that missing the April 30 deadline forfeits office, in a case tied to three Chicago aldermen and the county state’s attorney’s ethics actions.

Two Chicago women plead guilty in Grundy petty theft case

Miss Susan Simms aged 17 and Miss Janice Walker aged 18 pleaded guilty to petty theft for shoplifting pant suits from Hideaway Dress Shop April 28. Simms received 45 days in jail and Walker was fined 1000 dollars with 295 dollars restitution shared. Brenda Ross was cleared. A separate indictments matter moved to grand jury, with prior hearings examined. Morris Planning Commission meets 7 30 p m today.

Newark Plans July 4 Celebration Theme America’s Seeds Are Sown

Newark sets July 4 events with a parade forming near the Lutheran Church for judging at 9 30 a.m. and marching at 10 00 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Woman’s Club with help from the Community Club Improvement Club Fireman’s Association American Legion and Legion Auxiliary. A queen contest is planned. Parade entries are welcome. After lunch a program starts at 1 p.m.
