Morris Elementary Board adopts policy on unused snow days

The Morris Elementary Board of Education set a policy to curb unused snow days, voting 3 to 2 with two abstentions. The measure allows snow days to be used only when weather is sufficiently severe.

Marines Fight Communists On Two Fronts Near Da Nang

US Marines clashed with Communist forces at two points south of Da Nang as casualties last week dropped to the lowest in two months. The 5th Marine Regiment faced a pouncing enemy near Leathernneck, while elements of the 7th Marine Regiment battled about 60 Viet Cong, reporting 15 enemy killed. In the Mekong Delta a hard core battalion of about 500 was decimated by helicopter gunships and artillery, with 211 killed and 17 captured. North of Saigon another Red battalion attacked an American company, leaving six Americans dead and 12 wounded as artillery pounded positions.

The Weather Bureau predicts mostly cloudy skies with possible thunderstorms and a low around 70. Friday will be hot and humid with thundershowers likely and a high near 90. Saturday looks cloudy and cooler with showers. Collins Station reported 90/69, Morris downtown read 81 at 9am and 88 at 11:15am.

Violence waned in Cincinnati and other Ohio cities after a night of clashes. Police reported 70 arrests and multiple arson fires while National Guardsmen patrolled streets amid threats to shoot on sight. Elsewhere, Tampa saw reduced trouble as patrols urged calm and Chicago and New York civil rights leaders moved to focus power on Cleveland.

Morris Community High School Board Meeting Postponed

The regular monthly meeting of the Morris Community High School Board of Education was postponed one week due to Supt. Claude Ragse being on vacation. It will be held at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

County Open Bids July 10 on New Nursing Home

Final plans for Grundy County nursing home construction have been approved by the county home committee. County Supervisor Burl Gotham said the Department of Public Health approved the plans June 5 after a Springfield trip and state architect Donald Jardine backed the approval. Bids will be opened July 10 at 7 p.m. in the county courthouse. Committee members include George Winterbottom Aux Sable Ray Hansen Morris Joseph Wilt Braceville and Harry Henderson Mazon.

School Bond Consulting Plan Presented to Morris Board

The Illinois School Consulting Service of Naperville outlined how bond sales via competitive bidding save districts money. Fred Burnham and David F. Schmid described study, implementation, and bond sale steps, noting a typical 1 percent fee with contingent terms and a 90 percent first-submission success rate. The Morris Elementary Board invited a formal letter before a June 28 meeting to consider the plan.
