Grundy County Chamber of Commerce backs a report by its civic recreation committee criticizing Stratton State Park. The plan calls for full time staff, better supervision, safety measures, and improved facilities to curb hazards and unsanitary conditions.
North Vietnamese forces attacked three U.S. bases south of Da Nang at night. The U.S. reported 14 Americans killed and 68 wounded, with 76 enemy dead. In the heaviest assault, sappers entered a hill base 30 miles south of Da Nang, leaving behind dead, a flame thrower, and 12 rifles. U.S. losses totaled one dead and seven wounded in another sector. B52 bombers struck targets along the Cambodian and Laotian borders near Dak To and Tay Ninh.
Two Naperville youths died and a third was seriously injured when their car left Illinois 71 north of Ottawa. Victims are 17 year old Mike Schweikert and 19 year old Jack Impey. Driver Carl Novotoney remains in serious condition at an Ottawa hospital.

An all white jury acquitted suspended white officer Ronald August of murdering 19 year old Aubrey Pollard during Detroit riots. The trial limited verdicts to guilty of first degree murder or not guilty, while August faces a separate federal conspiracy charge.
An early morning blaze at Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe just south of Interstate 80 nine miles west of Morris caused extensive interior damage and knocked out power and phone service. Firemen from Morris and Seneca battled the flames starting at 5:15 a.m., with total losses limited to the furnace area and merchandise largely intact valued in the tens of thousands. The store likely will be closed several days for cleanup.
Morris Fire Department officials and State Rep James R Washburn met with Dan Makolvick assistant to William Rutherford head of the Illinois Department of Conservation in Springfield. An 18 year old Naperville girl Carolyn Truxes fell about 15 feet into Illinois Canyon Starved Rock State Park around 4 pm Monday. She was treated at Ryburn Hospital Ottawa then transferred to Hinsdale sanitarium ICU. She was with five or six teens when she slipped into the canyon. Ottawa Fire Department first aid squad aided in rescue.
In Jacksonville Mrs. Samuel P. Holmes received a water bill for 25 484 66 dollars. She says officials promised a corrected bill after the excessive charge raised questions about the meter.
The GAO reports Air Force cost reports on the C5A failed to reflect its own estimates showing a large overrun. With 115 planes from Lockheed at 5.2 billion, costs exceed original estimates by about 1.8 billion and contract targets by over 2 billion.
Doctors at Beth Israel Medical Center report 25 volunteers for the first human implantation of a nuclear powered cardiac pacemaker. The device, developed by the Atomic Energy Commission, has been implanted in a dog and may begin human trials at Beth Israel in Newark in about eight months.

New York Mobile Oil Corp announces a 160000 barrel per day refinery planned for Channahon Township near Joliet. An Joliet office will support design and construction with Fluor Corporation as general contractor. Construction expected spring 1970, completion mid 1972.
In Parkersburg West Virginia Susan and Roger Bailey 15 face murder charges after a predawn fire killed 12 family members including their parents and 10 siblings. Investigators found gasoline evidence and a possible motive linked to a cousin boyfriend. Two teens appeared sobbing at a preliminary hearing while psychiatric and welfare reports are sought.
