Morris firemen battle two rubbish fires in city
Firemen answered Monday evening alarms on East Douglas Street for a small rubbish container blaze which was extinguished. A second call at 817 Pine Street found no fire upon arrival.
Light statewide vote in Illinois judicial election
Illinois voters elected 83 circuit judges in a light election. Republicans won most downstate contests while Democrats swept Cook County, with 3 Dems winning contests there and 10 Democrats to 7 Republicans among all downstate seats. Voter turnout was low, and Chicago approved 13 city bond issues for a $113 million public improvement program. Justice Ray Kling Biel was unopposed and reelected in the fourth district.

St Louis Man Killed in Crash Near Gardner
George W. Miche, 64, of 3800 Lawler Drive in St. Louis died in a two mile south of Gardner crash on U.S. Highway 66. His car left the road, overturned multiple times, and crossed into ditches and a fence before stopping in a field. No other vehicle was involved. The body went to Hansen Funeral Home Gardner and then to St. Louis for funeral arrangements. An inquest will be held later by Coroner W. Clark Davis.

Tragedy at Illinois coal mine claims two youths
Patrick Conroy 19 and Ben Van Cleave 22 plunged into a strip mine pit northeast of Coal City during a midnight swim. Conroy drowned in 45 feet of water and was recovered at 7:20 a.m. Van Cleave, missing hours earlier, was found exhausted on a spoil pile after a five hour search.
