U S armored units sweep a vast bunker complex on the Vietnamese coast near Quang Ngai in one of the war’s most notable bombardments. The operation followed record U S losses in May including 36 planes, while North Vietnamese fighters shot down 27 MiGs.
One of two Big Wells migrants in a September truck crash near Dwight stayed in critical condition at St. James Hospital Pontiac. Ted Munroz was removed from critical status, while James Munroz remained critically ill. The 21 Mexican migrants rode in the truck when a rear tire blew on U S 66 near Illinois 47.
Associate Circuit Judge Ro bert W. Malmquist fined Earl McLain David Holcomb and Raymond Brooks ten dollars each for contempt for failing to appear on delinquent personal property tax citations. McLain owes 99.92 in taxes plus 39.00 costs Holcomb 89.29 in taxes plus 30.60 costs Brooks 84.84 in taxes plus 30.60 costs. Zimmer and Smith received continuances. The cases are part of a program by the state's attorney's office under Grundy County Board of Supervisors to collect delinquent taxes.
Morris Public Library opens registration for the children's summer reading program. Librarian Mrs. Gordon Gregg says the program serves first through fourth graders. Six week sessions start June 6 with a requirement to read 12 books to earn a merit badge.
The United Network said it dropped its televised night variety show from Las Vegas. The program starred Bill Dana and aired for the final time on Wednesday night, according to a network spokesman.
The U S Weather Bureau calls for fair conditions tonight with a low near 50. Friday should be mostly sunny with a high around 70, and Saturday looks sunny and warmer. Collins Weather Station logged Wednesday high 67 and low 51, with 9 am reading of 59 today. Downtown Morris reported 68 at 11 15 am.

The Illinois Senate passed a bill to authorize the state to call for a single bid from mechanical trades on a construction project. The measure won approval by 41 to 8, with Sen. W Russell Arrington of Evanston saying it could save tens of millions by removing the requirement that bids be received separately from each trade.

A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Illinois 47 involved a 1965 IHC semi driven by Rowlan L. Spears and a 1963 GMC driven by Russell A. Wetter. No injuries were reported. Spears’ truck jackknifed, left the roadway and was towed from the scene.
