Haldeman Testifies On $90000 Campaign for Black Projects

Former White House chief of staff H R Haldeman testified he approved a Feb 3 1972 memo seeking funds through Aug 20 1972 for White House political projects including a $90000 allocation for black projects to be run by Charles W Colson. He could not recall what the projects were and said they may not relate to earlier black advance work.

Cambodian bombing halt studied by Supreme Court

Justice Thurgood Marshall took under advisement a bid to reinstate a federal court order for an immediate U S bombing halt in Cambodia. He scheduled a ruling for today or Wednesday after a New York circuit stay delayed Judge Judd's Friday cutoff and Aug 13 timing. Plaintiffs include Rep Elizabeth Holtzman and three Air Force pilots.

Weather Begins Cloudy Cooler with Mild Temperatures

The forecast calls for cloudy and cooler conditions with a high in the mid to upper seventies and a low in the low sixties. Monday reached 82 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with 64 overnight, while 7am readings were 67 and 73 in Morris downtown by 10:20am. Precipitation totaled .17 inches.

Citizens oppose wastewater plan in McHenry County

McHenry County residents voiced opposition at a Woodstock hearing on two proposed wastewater treatment plans for the southern Lake Michigan area. Speakers raised concerns on land values, ground saturation, and disease risk from open treatment, noting rat problems near lagoons. Thirteen Overcome by Chlorine Gas at Lemont Plant

Thirteen people were overcome by chlorine gas from a pressurized tank at Steelco Chemical Corp in Lemont Illinois. Five were hospitalized and others treated and released. EPA said two Lemont police officers were injured. The leak was contained and similar incident occurred in 1971 with a $20 000 fine imposed.

Bloomington approves $3 million bond for district upgrades

Voters in Bloomington and Normal approve by more than a 2 to 1 margin the issuance of 3 million dollars in bonds to upgrade treatment facilities in the Bloomington Normal Sanitary District. This clears the way to pursue state and federal funds for the remaining 6.2 million dollars of the 9.2 million project.

Westclox workers ratify three year contract ending Peru strike

United Steel Workers members at Westclox Peru vote 746 to 170 to end a June strike involving about 500 workers. The deal raises wages 6.25 percent first year and 5.25 percent in years two and three, with two weeks vacation pay due within five days of return. About 125 machinists honored the picket line and roughly 1.75 million dollars in wages were lost during the walkout.

Indiana Dunes erosion funds approved for lakeshore

Washington AP reports the Office of Management and Budget authorized 3.1 million dollars for erosion control along Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Rep. Earl Landgrebe notes the Corps of Engineers will perform the work using National Park Service funds. Completion date not provided.
