Kerner seeks drought disaster aid for 51 Southern Illinois counties

Gov. Otto Kerner asked U S Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman to declare 51 Southern Illinois counties drought disaster areas as weeks of extreme heat have damaged crops. Counties listed include Bond, Madison, Sangamon, and Williamson. approval could allow farmers to reallocate corn and soybean acreage to pasture.

Grundy County ASC to Elect Board July 29

A county convention to fill vacancies on the Grundy County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee will be held July 29 at 9 a.m. in the ASCS office. The public election uses secret ballots and a plurality system.

Three Escape Serious Injury In Joliet Plant Blast

Harland Waddell 26 of 126 Blackstone Joliet and two coworkers escaped serious injuries after a blast at Joliet Army Ammunition Plant at 3 15 pm Thursday. They used an escape chute and received first aid then were released. An investigation is underway to determine cause as plant officials said the explosion was confined to one building. This followed a fatal June incident at the plant involving Orville Sorensen 48 of Bradley.

Cost of Living Rises Again in June

Washington reports a 0.3 percent June rise in consumer prices, driven by a 0.4 percent jump in food costs. The six month increase marks the largest since 1958, with the index at 112.9 percent of the 1957 9 average. Commissioner Arthur Ross declined to forecast future moves.

Weekend Forecast Says Partly Cloudy and Warmer

The weatherman predicts tonight will be partly cloudy and warmer with a mid 0s low. Saturday brings partly cloudy skies and warm weather with possible afternoon and evening thunder showers and highs in the upper 80s. At Collins Weather Station Friday the high was 84 and the low 52. Morristown observatory reports 70 at 9 a.m. in the downtown business district.

United Fund Formed From Grundy County Chest and Red Cross

The Grundy County Community Chest and Red Cross chapters merge to form the United Fund of Grundy County. Arthur Rostron is chairman and William Norton secretary treasurer. The drive targets $35,000 for 1967, with seven organizations supported in a single campaign starting in October.

The brother-in-law John Agrue, 18, admitted killing Susan Marino, 14, whose stabbed body was found in Hammel Woods forest preserve on Joliet's western edge after the two met in downtown Joliet. Boy Killed in Elevator Fall Near Pana Illinois

Bobby Blemler a 17 year old construction worker fell to his death early today from a grain elevator under construction four miles west of Pana The men had been working 160 feet above ground and returned to find his body at the foot of a ladder well inside the elevator The Rosamond Elevator Co was building the structure Blemler lived in Pana.

Morris Boy 8 Hurt After Running Into Car

An eight year old Morris boy named Jeffrey Bloomfield was struck by a southbound car at Illinois 47 and U S 6 at 6 30 p m and listed in fair condition. He was taken to the hospital with a deep head wound and was with his siblings and father earlier at a laundromat.

Seven Injured In Early Morning Verona Collision

A two car crash south of Kinsman injured seven people including five Verona boys on their way to work. Jess Wilhelm and his brother Bob were hospitalized in fair condition. The five boys received treatment in Mazon and Morris, with one sent for x rays. Olson Wrecker of Mazon removed the vehicles.
