Riots in Cleveland Prompt National Guard Deployment

National Guardsmen armed with machine guns patrol the battered Hough area under a state of emergency after two Black men were killed amid four hours of rioting. Troops from the 107th Armored Cavalry and 37th Infantry Division, plus additional units from Wooster, were mobilized. Police and firefighters faced extensive violence, looting, and fires with hundreds arrested as authorities pledged further action if needed.

Fern Peterson Dies Today in Nursing Home

Fern Bernice Peterson 62 of rural Morris died this morning at Lincoln Nursing Home after a week and a half as a patient. A Grundy County educator for 40 years she retired last year and served as a substitute in Morris and Minooka schools. Survived by sister Sadie Bentson Los Gatos Calif and brothers Ralph Morris and Darwin East Peoria. Funeral arrangements incomplete at Finland Funeral Home.

Bridge Bids Open for Stratton Park Access

Bids for a bridge over the Illinois Michigan Canal into William G. Stratton State Park on Price Street are due August 2. Announcement by Francis S. Lorenz, Illinois Public Works director, notes the span will improve access to launching ramps and parking and ease congestion at Illinois Avenue and Calhoun Street. Construction funded by the state boating fund from gas taxes.

New Volunteer Plan at Center

William W. Fox Children's Center at Dwight launches a second national volunteer program for physically handicapped and profoundly mentally retarded children. An orientation starts late August with a long term training path and duties in recreation transportation and nursing. Volunteers will work three hours a day Monday through Thursday.

Nurse Testimony Ties Speck To Nurse Slayings In Chicago

In Chicago the nurse Corazon Amarao identified Richard Speck as the intruder in the eight murder case. Speck, 24, lay in City Jail Hospital after chest pains and a possible prior heart attack. Doctors ordered rest and no interviews for 48 hours as tests were planned.

Grand Ridge Road Bids Due Aug. 5

Public works bids called for eight miles of concrete on Grand Ridge Road from west of Mazon to the county line with bids due in Springfield on August 5. The project is among 83 statewide worth about 27 million dollars listed by the Division of Highways for bid. Other local items include 19.22 miles of concrete shoulders on Interstate 80 from LaSalle Grundy line to Minooka and Joliet traffic sign installation on 4.87 miles of I 80 in Joliet. Repairs are planned for grade separation structures on U.S. 6 over U.S. 66 northeast of Channahon.
