Joliet Man Is Fourth Grundy County Traffic Fatality
A 39 year old Joliet man, Charles R. Nickell, was killed in a one car crash at Pearl and Coal City Roads in Goose Lake Township. His 1965 Volkswagen left a 75 foot skid before entering a ditch and rolling over into a bean field. Coroner and sheriff deputies investigated. car and fence damage reported. no property damage estimate.

Police shoot tires on hijack plane at Lake Jackson

Lightning strikes rural Illinois home causing extensive fire damage
A rural Mazon house three quarters of a mile south of Illinois 113 on Illinois 47 was hit by lightning during a thunderstorm and heavily damaged. Mrs. Dorothy Gantzert and her son Paul were present. Paul alerted neighbors and fire crews at about 3 a.m. as electricity and phone service failed. The Mazon fire department fought the blaze, with Morris firefighters assisting until 5:25 a.m.
