Sen. George McGovern surged toward the Democratic nomination as 151 disputed California delegates were seated, bringing him within about 25 votes of a first ballot nomination. The convention faced dawn as votes reshaped the race and ousted Chicago Mayor Daley.
Morris city council approves bidding for city landfill coverage at 4 p m July 24 with a 7 1 vote. New dumping rates range from 1 for autos to 15 for largest trucks and shed exemptions end. A three month trial may precede bids, and a monthly trash pickup plan is proposed.
McGovern sits within 24 votes of a first ballot presidential nomination after sweeping major credentials fights at the Democratic National Convention. He gained back 151 California delegates and held an edge in Illinois, with 1,509 needed and 1,485.35 secured. Weather in Grundy County expected to stay hot and humid, with storms possible and temperatures in the 90s.
The Democratic National Convention overturned a Credentials Committee ruling to rebuke Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and 58 other delegates, while adding women to two Illinois delegations. California votes were returned to George McGovern. Delegations from several states had challenges dropped or settled, including four blacks added to Georgia with Carter and Bond mediating.
At a short Grundy County Housing Authority meeting Executive Director Tracy Adcock got a retroactive raise to 375 a month with an extra 100 monthly stipend and 5.50 per unit for overseeing 50 Morris housing units. The increase, retroactive to Jan 1 and Feb 1 1972, was approved unanimously after executive session.
District police identify Clay Helton, about 45 to 50, of unknown address, as the man found slain on the Interstate 55 exit ramp to Illinois 113. The body was dragged 129 feet after a car driven by Robert J. Verdun, 25, of Odell struck him at 3 a.m. Helton was dead at the scene from injuries prior to the hit-and-run.
Coal City Village Board delayed action on accepting a contract for a sanitary sewer system in Pompano Subdivision until an EPA permit is received. Bids from Grundy Road Builders for 972 feet of eight inch sewer were $12,335, opened June 26, with final decision tabled. The board rejected summer street maintenance bids as over estimate and will re-bid on July 24.
