Marines halt large North Vietnamese assault near DMZ

U S Marines stopped an infiltrating force of about 3000 North Vietnamese regulars in savage combat near the demilitarized zone. Casualties totaled 58 killed, 125 wounded for Marines with 86 enemy fighters reported killed. Additional clashes included attacks on a Da Nang base and damage to Dong Ha airfield.

The U S Weather Bureau forecasts mostly sunny cool weather with highs 68 to 75 today and around 70 Tuesday. The five day outlook shows average highs 3 to 5 degrees below normal near 83 to 88 with a 9 a m reading of 62 today.

Pool Attendance Soars at Morris Pool in June

Morris Municipal Swimming Pool will skip Red Cross swimming classes on Tuesday for Fourth of July observance. Regular hours resume Wednesday. June attendance reached 13,801, the highest since June 1959, with 630 registrations for Red Cross classes in 13 years, about 500 to 550 attending morning sessions.

Thousands of teens and young adults hurled bottles and fireworks in a second night of violence in Lake Geneva Wisconsin. Police described a large crowd causing property damage including broken windows and damaged vehicles while authorities imposed a 1 am curfew and mobilized emergency measures.

Critical five year old in Joliet hospital

Continues critical condition of Kevin Olson five son of Mr and Mrs Howard Olson 1341 Park Boulevard who was struck by a car Wednesday in Hi Park subdivision. Family spokesman says he underwent brain surgery Sunday and is holding his own in the intensive care unit at St Joseph Hospital Joliet.

Fatal Wounds Reported In Du Quoin

Clifton L. Hestand age 34 of Du Quoin died from gunshot wounds in an apparent accidental shooting while trying to dislodge a shell from his shotgun. Coroner E W West of Perry County announced the finding.

Six Teens Die In Illinois Weekend Traffic Plunge

Six teen drivers and passengers die in a weekend crash near Grand Ridge Illinois 23 north of Grand Ridge La Salle County and in further crashes across Illinois. A seventh youth is critically injured. The weekend toll climbs toward 400 traffic deaths with a four day Independence Day period still underway.

Child Burned at Stratton Park

A 2 year old girl Debra Varble of Crete was burned when a coffee pot overturned at Stratton Park at 2 p.m. She received stomach burns and was treated and released from Morris Hospital the same day.

Morris Rotarians Pledge for Rainbow Council Camp

Rotarians and individuals in Morris pledged 2390 dollars toward Rainbow Council Camp development. The three county total nears 44 000 with a 75 000 county goal and a 426 000 regional goal. Plans include a memorial headquarters at 24000, a 40000 maintenance post in Kankakee, and a 50000 dining hall in Will. The 755 acre camp lies southeast of Morris near the Mazon River.

Clashes Continue at Suez As UN Talks Move

Egyptian and Israeli troops clash for the third day near El Qantara on the Suez Canal. The United Nations prepares a vote on withdrawal demands while both sides report casualties and artillery exchanges. Israeli officials claim Egyptian tanks and armored cars were destroyed. Cairo says Egyptians repelled an Israeli attack and crossed the canal briefly.

Washington AP The House Committee on Un American Activities says Communist organizations have been importantly involved in the great majority of anti war demonstrations in the United States. The foreword by Chairman Edwin E Willis states not all protests were organized by Communists but they have been the guiding force in major demonstrations. Americans must inform themselves to avoid Communist lies and distortions and to warn others.

Spanish Pavilion in downtown St Louis begins reconstruction originally built for the 1964 65 World’s Fair. The Spanish government donated funds for rebuilding in the city center.
