Weather halts plant picketing at Edison LaSalle plant

Weather stopped picketing at Commonwealth Edison LaSalle Nuclear Power Station in Seneca, with 1,800 to 2,000 at the Grand Ridge Road entrance. Two Marseilles men, Charles Raikes and Kenneth Fessler, faced mob action and weapon charges, bonded at 1,000 and 3,000 dollars respectively, and were barred from the site as court dates were set.

Cloudy conditions with possible snowfall and a forecast low of 12 below zero. Friday promises partly sunny skies with highs 5 to 15. Wednesday peaked at 30 degrees at Dresden Island Locks and Darrn with a zero low. Morning readings showed 9 degrees at 7 am and 20 degrees at 11 am in Morris. Snow measured at two inches.

Rules not to suspend Bar I plus III's license

The liquor license of William Harty doing business as the Bar I plus III will not be suspended at this time. Grundy County State's Attorney Charles Zalar said a hearing was held after a Tuesday raid over lewd dancing. Harty will discontinue nude or exotic dancing and the license faces possible suspension if further violations occur.

Blizzard paralyzes Illinois shutting roads and schools

A fierce overnight blizzard with winds to 50 mph piled eight foot snowdrifts across Illinois, forcing the closure of roads and hundreds of schools. At least two weather related deaths were reported while O'Hare Airport remained shut due to zero visibility. Roads statewide were blocked, with I 57 and rural routes closed as snow plows and National Guard shelters aided stranded motorists and evacuees. The storm brought subzero wind chills, drifts up to four feet, and widespread displacements as towns mobilized shelters and rescue efforts.

Health department warns Illinois residents to stay indoors

SPRINGFIELD Illinois residents should stay indoors as a wind whipped blizzard heads toward the state with temperatures near zero and gusts up to 50 mph. Officials advise layering light clothing and not shoveling unless in excellent shape while drivers should keep supplies and avoid unnecessary travel. If stranded, stay in the car with a window open slightly and run the engine briefly for heating while awaiting rescue.

Driver in guarded condition after I 80 crash near Morris

Jon Gaines 33 of Marseilles remained in guarded condition at St Joseph Hospital Joliet after colliding with a semi driven by Gregory Hendrickson 37 of Riverton Wy on I 80 four miles west of Illinois 47. Morris Fire Department assisted removing Gaines from the car a 1973 Chevrolet towed by Olson's service station Gaines was first treated at Morris Hospital then transferred to St Joseph no damage estimate or tickets issued.

Fire destroys Gardner house in residential blaze

A Gardner family of five became homeless after a Wednesday fire destroyed nearly all possessions. John Kociss Jr his wife and three children fled their home at Jefferson and Monroe Streets around 7 pm. Fire chief Don Jensen said the family escaped unharmed and clothes are being collected at the Church of Hope as investigators pursue a cause hampered by bad weather. The family’s current location is unknown.

Man robs self serve gas station in Kankakee

Police said a man walked into a downtown Kankakee self service gas station and began filling tanks for customers while pocketing the money he collected. He worked the pumps for "quite a few" cars and took a significant amount before a station attendant intervened.
