A severe winter storm buried Southern Illinois under up to 16 inches of snow and deep drifts, closing schools and many roads. State police warned of hazardous travel as more than 100 DOT trucks worked to keep routes open. Rail and hospital services were strained while emergency crews aided pregnant residents en route to care.

Santa Monica, Calif. (UPI) Stevie Wonder Conway Twitty Loretta Lynn and Fleetwood Mac were double winners at the American Music Awards. Wonder won top male soul singer and Songs in the Key of Life top soul album. Twitty and Lynn shared top country group. Lynn also won top female country singer. Fleetwood Mac named top pop group and Rumours top pop album. Winners chosen by 30,000 record buyers from industry chart nominations in a televised ceremony.

In Barcelona eighty Modelo prison inmates cut their veins in a bid for a general pardon, with 200 more on hunger strike. Police guarded the facility as ambulances ferried wounded prisoners to hospitals. Population shifts trim St. Louis city share in 1970s
A UPI study released by the East West Gateway Coordinating Council shows over 17 percent of St. Louis city residents left since the 1970 census while the metro area grew by 1.6 percent. The metro population exceeds 2.4 million with 514,800 in the city, the century’s low city figure. Jefferson and St. Charles counties lead gains, each at 25 percent or more, with all surrounding counties rising.
