Voyageurs Endure Bitter Winter On LaSalle Expedition

The LaSalle Expedition II, with 16 graduates and teachers from Chicago and Elgin, battles a 100 year cold snap as rivers freeze and snow halts canoe travel. Four youths were hospitalized after a road accident and the group camps in sleeping bags donated by the Canadian government while continuing toward Seneca and Grundy County events.

Gilmore execution ends decade long U S delay in Utah

Gary Gilmore was executed at sunrise in Utah after a series of stays and appeals. Witnesses described the scene of the firing squad and Gilmore’s calm demeanor as the order was carried out. His body was donated to the University of Utah Medical Center for transplant research before funeral plans in Provo.

Illinois Ends U.S. 66 Signs Removal Starts Today

The Illinois Department of Transportation begins removing U.S. 66 route signs as Interstate 55 replaces the historic road. Replicas of the shield sign will be sold for 3 dollars at Springfield and Schaumburg locations or 4 dollars by mail, with two signs per person.

Truck overturns injuring driver on I 80 near Illinois 47

Knoxville Iowa driver Steve Hartzler, 28, was hospitalized at Morris Hospital after his 1968 Kenworth struck the rear of a Blue Earth Minnesota semi and overturned on Interstate 80 near the Illinois 47 northbound exit at 1 06 a m. Hartzler was pinned and rescued by the Morris Fire Department. The other driver Roger Sandell and passenger Merlin Larson were slightly injured. The truck carried 68 carcasses of swinging beef for Tella Packing Co. Hartzler was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.

Braceville Woman Killed in Mobil Refinery Accident

Braceville, Ill. Miss Helen Ann Ward twenty died late Sunday at the Mobil Refinery in Elwood after exposure to hydrogen sulfide during a routine operation. Ward, a six month employee and process technician, was treated at the plant and rushed to St Joseph Hospital Joliet. Mobil investigates. Ward was born July 15 1956 in Little Rock Ark. She was a Gardner South Wilmington High School graduate and Joliet Junior College attendee.

Union approves Caterpillar contract despite strike vote

Union members at Caterpillar Tractor Joliet rejected a strike proposal by a 53 percent vote though needed two thirds for approval. Negotiations began Nov 15 with a tentative deal Jan 7 and a three year contract expiring Jan 15 1980 reportedly raises 66 cents to 1.13 dollars. No work interruptions occurred and the strike was avoided. Police chief Robert Lynes was released from Morris Hospital after 10 days with chest and arm pains and remains under medical evaluation.

Kendall appoints highway superintendent for Kendall County

Joseph Gasser of Gibson City was named county highway superintendent by the Kendall County Board. Gasser, 48, has led Ford County highways for 17 years and previously assisted at McLean. He replaces retiring David W. Sharkey who leaves Feb 1. Gasser earned a Purdue degree and worked with the U S Geological Survey and the Army Corps of Engineers. His salary is $28,000 annually.
