Dominican Crisis Passes Climax Break-Ins Reported

A rash of four burglaries reported to police included the Carson Hotel and Tap where $1,022 in cash and silver was taken from a first floor apartment. Other losses included $83.50 from Jake Olson’s tavern, plus $15 to the Morris Booster Club. Entry appeared to be gained by forced windows and unlocked doors in two Main Street apartment units. Authorities noted no forced entry at those residences and suspected key access.

Authorities Seek Hit and Run Driver

Jack Johnson an 18 year old of Route 1 reported damage to his 1960 Chevrolet from a hit and run at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Division Streets about 10 a.m. today. He said a truck from behind cut in front of him and struck the left side and bumper then fled the scene.

GOP Women to Meet January 12 in Grundy County

The Grundy County Republican Women's Club schedules a meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday January 12 in Mrs. William G. Stratton's home. Program chairman Mrs. Robert Cohenour has arranged S. J. Smash Plot by Viet Cong in Saigon Today

Police foiled a Viet Cong plan to blow up a U.S. billet in downtown Saigon using a 265 pound plastic bomb found in a water tank. Six terrorists were seized north of the city and two carried 45 caliber automatics as the operation was disrupted.

Two in Custody on Check Charges

Two men identified as Happy Chandler King and Edward Earl Williams were jailed in Cairo Illinois after attempting to cash a check. Authorities say checks and a check writing machine were taken in a burglary of the Ridgecrest Corporation a few days earlier. Bonds were set at 10000 each.

Winter Sweeps Into Illinois Today Weather Drop and Snow

Winter moved into Illinois with sharp temperature drops and light snow in the northern quarter. Early snow left slick roads as trucks moved and salt was spread on Chicago streets and toll routes. Temperatures fell to the teens in the north and near zero in Rockford with 1 to 2 inches expected in eastern northern Illinois. Cold conditions extend to the south with lows 15 to 25 above zero Friday night.

Johnson to deliver State of Union next Wednesday

President Johnson will address a joint session of Congress at 9 p.m. Eastern Time next Wednesday after Senate Majority Leader Mansfield met with him at the White House. Press secretary Moyers announced the timing as Congress opens its new session on Monday.

Delegation of New York labor union members seeks help from Gov. Rockefeller to end a week-long transit strike. They press for hospitalizing union chiefs Quill and eight other officers to be released from jail for contempt. Talks with Mayor Lindsay and Wirtz stall as case weighs fines and possible sentences.

FBI to Prosecute In Check Case

A second bogus check written on the United Funeral Chapel in Chicago was reported by the sheriff's office. The last one cashed at the National Food Store in Morris dated Dec. 3 for 93.69 to Grace Weith who endorsed it without an address. Linda J. Morgan, 21, no home address, held in Sycamore jail after being nabbed in DeKalb for attempting to cash a check. The FBI will prosecute, stopping DeKalb Grundy and La Salle Counties from further action.

Grady County Faces Possible First Sub Zero This Year

Grundy County forecasts warn of a potential sub zero cold snap with temperatures dipping to five below to five above. Weekend outlook calls for fair skies but continued very cold conditions with highs near 20. Collins Weather Station reported a Thursday high of 29, falling to 14 by morning with light snow flurries, then clearing by mid morning.

Provisional Regime Still Holds Power

In Santo Domingo the provisional government and President Hector Garcia Godoy faced a crisis as he proposed sending certain military figures abroad. The armed forces blocked the move and the capital briefly faced occupation rumors. The 11,000 strong peace force remained idle while Garcia Godoy insisted he would stay in office with OAS backing. The president dismissed resignations and warned any rebellion would fail without U.S. support.
