Johnson Seeks Action to Cut Health Costs and Boost Public TV

President Johnson urged Congress to lower medical expenses and expand noncommercial broadcasting for education. He called for a national conference on medical costs, a Corporation for Public Television, and studies on satellite links for educational TV and radio.

Canvass Shows Little Change In Junior College Vote

The February 18 vote establishing Class I junior college district No. 525 in Grundy Will Kendall LaSalle and Kankakee Counties shows minimal changes from the initial counts. Totals: 19,966 yes 5,039 no 241 spoiled, 25,246 total. Joliet District 204 had 10,677 yes 3,603 no 154 spoiled, 14,434 total. In Troy the corrected count was 293 yes from 374.

Prairie Park hearing draws crowd and strong testimony

A Grundy County Planning Commission hearing on the Goose Lake prairie state park drew about 75 attendees. Forty plus testified over nearly three hours with supporters urging preservation and industrial voices highlighting economic needs.

Speck Trial Recessed After Illness Reported In Peoria

The Richard Speck murder trial paused as doctors treated the 25 year old defendant for abdominal pains. Dr. Donald Burham said tests were negative and Speck should recover by Wednesday, with Speck escorted under heavy guard from his cell to a doctor’s office for examination.

Morris High School staffer files to join Morris Elementary board

Richard F. Waterhouse of 605 Armstrong St., a Morris Community High School guidance counselor, filed a petition for a one year term on the Morris Elementary School Board on Monday. County supervisor Arthur Meadors said he presumes legal checks cleared, while noting he has no knowledge of the petition. Waterhouse has lived in Morris four years and worked at MCHS during that period.

Arson Investigated After Seneca Fires

State Fire Marshal Joe Tolli and the LaSalle County Sheriff's Department probe three suspected arsons in Seneca. A 1962 Dodge abandoned near Starved Rock State Park burned, a barn at the Tesdal farm north of Seneca burned with tools lost, and a second barn near Stavanger owned by George Southcombe destroyed with 500 bales of hay.

Council Grants County Permit For New Home

Morris City grants a five acre county home site west of Lisbon Street near Nettle Creek for a new county home building to meet zoning guidelines. Atty Adcock to draft a resolution opposing Chicago sludge dumping into the Illinois Michigan Canal. Alderman Davidson cites untagged used cars blocking Liberty and Benton Streets and suggests two hour parking. Meter maid to receive standard clothing allowance after committee favorably recommends.

Holler Opens Petition for Grundy Will Junior College

Allen Holler of Mazon filed the first petition from Grundy Will nonincorporated areas for Junior College District 525. Dr Barry Seng of Morris and attorney John Zerboglio of Coal City also obtained petitions from County Superintendent Arthur Meadors. Two of seven board members must come from the unincorporated region. Filing starts next Monday with a March 24 deadline. election set for April 15.

Blood Drive Urgently Seeks Donors At Morris Church

At the First Presbyterian Church in Morris the Red Cross bloodmobile collected 20 pints so far and must reach 100 pints. The unit stays open until 5 30 p m today. Grundy County Red Cross secretary Mrs John Marder notes the next Morris bloodmobile is scheduled for April 14.

Driver Killed in Lincoln Crash on Route 121

Roland E. Barry, 37, of rural Lincoln, died when his car lost control on Route 121 and struck a telephone pole, state police said. The single-vehicle wreck occurred today near Lincoln.

Four Ward Primary Sees Heavy Fourth Ward Interest

Voters flock to the four ward alderman race with incumbents Hundt Davidson and Sklut in contest. By 10 30 a m totals reached 514 with 175 in the fourth ward and light turnout in others. Absentee ballots total 56 as polls close at 6 p m.
