Mrs. Mattson and her dog Putts visit Valley school north of Morris on a Friday afternoon. The dog demonstrates simple addition and numbers to entertained children who are amazed by the dog’s apparent ability to add.
Classified notice lists a refrigerator in very good condition and several other items for sale including a 1947 automobile a three bedroom house on a large lot and Toy Manchester puppies.
A year-end summary prepared by administrator Miss Dee Elsome shows Morris Hospital grew as a community facility with 1997 admissions, 2461 treated, and 423 more patients than the previous year. Local and regional patients came from Morris, LaSalle, Will, Livingston, Kendall, and surrounding counties, plus 22 from outside the state. The report notes 39 in hospital, 31 deaths within 48 hours, average stay four days, and 737 operating room patients including 205 major surgeries and 532 minor surgeries. There were 15 Caesarean sections and 145 tonsil removals with 631 patients given anesthetics.
The Democratic National Committee voted 71 to 35 to hold the 1960 nominating convention in Los Angeles, with Chicago and Philadelphia factions opposing. Gov. Edmund G Brown could leverage California’s delegation on the first ballot, while Sen. Lyndon Johnson and Speaker Sam Rayburn headline tonight’s $100 plate dinner. The July 11 opening at the Los Angeles Arena will seat 22,400, with 3,500 delegates on the main floor and 80 percent of the arena completed.
Leaders of 12 Illinois Lutheran groups announce vigorous opposition to a bingo bill in the General Assembly. Rev. Victor C. Rickman of Chicago releases a joint statement stating gambling remains gambling no matter the name. The measure would legalize bingo for charitable, religious, fraternal and educational aid.
Gambrel estimates a flood from an irrigation ditch opened nearby ruined about 500 dollars worth of earthworms he was raising for fishermen. The loss occurred as the flooded plot impacted his worm business in Albuquerque New Mexico.
Former Teamster leader Dave Beck received a five year prison term and a 60000 dollar fine for income tax evasion. Judge George Boldt denounced Beck’s greed, and Beck posted about 70961 to cover the fine and costs before his release. The case involved evasion totals up to about 258,636 with added penalties reaching 555,911.
Judge Leonard Hoffman sentenced William Rose to not less than one nor more than two years in the Illinois State Penitentiary and Dennis Lutomski to six months at the Vandalia Penal Farm. Lutomski also earned a five year probation period.
Louis P. Ruffatti of Eileen sustained broken ribs and other injuries when his car skidded on ice on Route 113 outskirts of Coal City, left the road, and struck a power pole and a beer sign in front of Dutch's Tavern. The vehicle was demolished. Trooper Richard Pierce investigated.
The Morris Building and Loan Association directors announce the purchase of the former H H Baum homestead at West Jefferson and Wauponsee for a permanent, one story brick office. The plan includes a drive up window, a lounge, and space for growth near the main retail area. The site faces Wauponsee Street with access from West Jefferson and possible drive around exits.
Ralph Winton and his wife Joan, both 24, of Ottawa were killed when their car rear ended a slow moving truck on Route 23 north of Ottawa. Their daughter Julie, 2, was critically injured. The truck had reduced speed while approaching a car in the ditch.
The body of 6-year-old Dennis Johnson, missing from his Normal home since February 9, was found Friday in a gravel pit a mile west of Bloomington. divers had pumped water from the pit since Thursday noon, and the search involved the FBI checking possible sightings with a man in Iroquois County and Indiana. Dennis was the son of Mr and Mrs Robert C Johnson Jr and had four brothers.
Illinois saw cooler but largely dry conditions with no precipitation forecast. Friday's high reached 56 degrees at Pyatt Weather station, a February record. Sunday is expected to mirror the warmth. Current 9 am temperature was 36 degrees and Friday's low was 30.

The una Sancta ecumenical movement most active in German speaking Europe celebrates twenty years of informal cooperation between Roman Catholic and Lutheran clergy and lay theologians. Based at the Benedictine Abbey in Nuiederaltaich, its aim is to seek God’s will through genuine Christian understanding rather than conversion. The movement began in 1939 with Rev Max Metzger, later martyred for aiding Protestants. it gained momentum during World War I through共同 worship and shared experiences in exile and camps.

Viggo Hansen of Philadelphia died Friday when a passenger helicopter struck a high tension wire. Also killed were two other men. Hansen, born in Morris, was a 1907 Morris High School and 1912 University of Illinois engineering graduate. He retired in 1958 after 35 years with Philadelphia Electric. He leaves a son in Nashville, two sisters, a niece, and his widow. Funeral in Philadelphia with burial in Nashville.
