At a special Joliet Junior College board meeting, trustees approved a Citizen Advisory Board’s recommendation to hold a referendum on a tax increase. Motion by John Cirricione directs administration to prepare for a May 10 vote. The board favors a 7.5 cent rate only as bonded indebtedness is paid, with no current tax rate rise. The district has not had an educational tax rate increase since its establishment. The building fund rate rose 2.5 cents in 1969 when the campus was approved.

Dixon resident found bound after kidnapping near Vancleave
Gene Dempsey, 32, of Dixon Illinois visiting the Mississippi Gulf Coast, was found bound in a wooded area near Vancleave after being abducted Monday. Clinton Pierre, 18, of Houma Louisiana, is charged with armed robbery and kidnapping guiding investigators to Dempsey who had survived over 60 hours bound with swollen hands and wrists. Dempsey had been staying at the Gulf Hills Dude Ranch in Ocean Springs.
