A tornado and high winds struck southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas causing one death and multiple injuries in the Joplin area. Mobile homes were leveled, several trailer courts damaged, and power lines downed as a dust storm spread across the Plains and Midwest with snow and freezing rain in other states.

Two drug victims improve in Joliet hospital
Two Chicago area men in stable condition in the intensive care unit of St. Joseph Hospital Joliet after drug overdoses. Harry Nasal 24 of Orland Park and Dennis Carver of Palos Heights were found at Romine's I 80 Ranch by Morris and State Police. Carver was discovered in the truckers bunk area with a syringe and pills nearby Nasal was located in the Romine's restaurant and swallowed tablets while officers held him. They were first treated at Morris Hospital then moved to St. Joseph Hospital Police Chief Robert Lynes said charges are pending.
