Morris Community High School expansion gains voter approval
Voters approved a 2.5 million addition to Morris Community High School with 1,496 yes to 1,243 no in a likely record turnout. The plan adds chemistry physics and science classrooms a 25 meter pool a field house and support facilities with no tax increase due to county assessment gains. Returns show precinct totals and unofficial canvass by the board set for Wednesday night with committee members praising volunteer workers.

Ex-Minooka mayor J. J. McEvilly dies aged 53
John J. Abe McEvilly, former Minooka mayor 1961 to 1969, died suddenly of a heart attack at St Joseph Hospital Joliet. He lived in Minooka his whole life and worked for Commonwealth Edison and the Natural Gas Co. Survived by a wife Hazel and children Terry Carol and Nancy. Dwight youths face charges in assault case
Three 16 year old Dwight youths Keith Chambers Jr Jeff Fipes and Kenneth Steichen were charged with attempted theft and assault. Police say they were detained at the Coffeehouse Restaurant after a reported car drive at a farmer near Essex. They also face curfew and liquor possession counts with Fipes charged for resisting police.

Crash injures seven near Gardner on Interstate 55
Seven people, including two Gardner residents Julie Tjelle 16 and Jan Perkins 17, were injured in a Sunday 1 40 a m two car crash on Interstate 55 three miles south of Gardner. Hinojosa 19 of El Paso Texas and Didlow 21 of Des Moines Iowa were admitted to Morris Hospital for observation. McNely 19 stationed at Rantoul Air Force Base was treated at Silver Cross Joliet. James Murphy 18 and Thomas Logan 19 were released. Tickets pending as investigation continues.

Mountain Runaways From DuPage Arrested In Carbondale
Two 16 and 15 year old runaways from DuPage County were found in the Carbondale area claiming to live in nearby mountains. The 16 year old pilfered cigarettes and cookies from a local market prompting police pursuit in which Officer Mike Johnson broke his wrist. The youths faced parole and burglary charges with West Chicago authorities scheduled to take custody.
