Dave Beck Sr. the former Teamsters president, 64, was convicted on all four counts of income tax evasion for 1950 to 1953 totaling $240,067 and two counts of filing false returns. He faces up to five years and $10,000 fines per count with sentencing planned in Seattle.
Chicago report states state superintendent George Wilkins urged the Illinois School Problems Commission to set flat state aid grants at about 40 per pupil for both grade and high school districts. He would raise current 22 and 7 dollar grants to equal levels, costing roughly seven million dollars in the next biennium.

The U S Weather Bureau cautions that weekend warming will not bring spring conditions to Grundy County. Tonight lows are five to ten degrees above zero, Saturday highs near 20, and Sunday will be partly cloudy with little temperature change. Thursday night dipped to two degrees below zero at Pyatt Weather station after a daytime high of 12. At 9 a.m. today the reading was eight degrees above zero.
Athens Ohio notes that when Ohio University opened on June 1 1809 it had three male students and one instructor. It has grown to about 7 000 students today reflecting vast expansion of the institution.
President Eisenhower and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos wrapped up two days of informal talks in Acapulco aboard the Lopez Mateos yacht. They pledged international friendship and discussed joint plans including the Diablo Dam on the Rio Grande border and concerns over cotton competition and mineral production.
In circuit court this morning Dennis Lutomski pleaded guilty to burglary. Further proceedings set for March 2, 1959. Richard Wilder of Morris named as Lutomski’s attorney. Also scheduled were Rose Harold Henry William Henry and Wayne Arnold for plea on burglary and related charges with hearings on February 27. All five defendants waived grand jury rights and opted for information. Bond set at 2500 each. none posted.
Senate investigators hear testimony about John Ambrosia and a manager’s act involving what appeared to be a bullet tied to urging Leonetti records. Witnesses discuss underworld ties and Teamsters pressure to place Leonetti discs in Chicago juke boxes amid threats and coercive language.
The Morris evening adult agriculture class will meet Monday at 7 30 p m at the Morris fire station to discuss rural fire problems and fire prevention. Firemen will explain equipment and the ecard system, stressing accurate location details to avoid costly delays.
Morris voters go to the polls Tuesday for a four ward aldermen primary with open polling from 6 am to 6 pm. Ward one sees Walter Hundt and Donald A. Johnson seek GOP renomination while wards two and three name George M. Franks and Donald Davidson respectively. Ward four offers newcomer Lowell Gant on the Republican ballot and no Democratic candidates appear on any ballot.
In Kankakee Illinois the disappearance of Victor E Curtis owner of the Kankakee Motor Coach Company his wife and two children along with three buses shocks the community. Police have no trace of the Curtis party and a bank foreclosed on a 17000 mortgage. The Illinois Commerce Commission had ordered a halt to operations after insurance lapses and safety inspections failed. A driver says back wages are owed and officials warn that abandoning transit without commission approval violates the Illinois Public Utilities Act with possible fines or jail.
The Grundy County Community Concert Association presents a final 1958 59 concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Morris Community High School auditorium featuring Janet Carlson and Bernard Izzo. The event also kicks off the 1959 60 membership drive as current members renew their seats. Adult tickets are $6 and student tickets $3. The program includes solos and duets from operettas and theatre music.
Capital Airways Constellation on a Charleston to Atlanta flight reported a near miss with a C123 cargo plane over Tennessee at about 8 000 feet near Knoxville. A second Capital jet with 37 passengers avoided a military bomber near Charlotte. FAA has opened investigations and calls for more reliable air traffic control facilities. Passengers unharmed in both incidents. Pilot Robert Spink.
John Sampson also known as John Baer, 75, was found dead in his Streator home with a wound on his forehead. Deputy Coroner to order autopsy. inquest deferred. Police rule out fall or robbery. witness says he left Century club with no obvious injuries. Funeral set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
