The Delaware County Coroner's office reported that the remains recovered from the wreckage of the Greek tanker Corinthos on February 7 include three men, three women, a child, and a dog.
A weather report notes cloudy and foggy conditions with temperatures in the mid twenties to thirties across Morris and Dresden Island Locks. A maritime disaster details the collision of the Corinthos with the American tanker Edgar M Queeny on January 31 in Marcus Hook Pennsylvania, causing explosions and a three day fire. Eleven people are reported dead with at least fifteen missing. three victims aboard Corinthos identified including Georgios Balalas Christos Fergadakis Evangelia Katte. One Queeny crewmember was injured. No remains identified for February 7 recoveries. Coast Guard notes relatives of Corinthos captain Gustas Marinos among missing visitors prior to the blast. A closing line offers a reflection on youth and independence.
Governor Daniel Walker unveiled 237 projects totaling about 850 miles of road and 94 bridges to be funded by a proposed $4.1 billion accelerated building program. The $180.326 million breakdown covers districts 2 through 9 with a focus on high unemployment areas and immediate impact projects.
Federal Energy Administrator Frank Zarb said President Ford intends to decontrol the price of domestic oil even if Congress blocks an excess profits tax. He noted the plan envisions freeing prices for certain oil and returning to market forces to curb shortages and higher consumer costs.
Brenda Faye Van Gorder sixteen, formerly of Morris, died after a basement fire at the Forrest O Chilcont residence in Burlington Wisconsin. Kathy Chilcoat sixteen received serious burns but survived. The blaze started when a heat lamp ignited a sweater. The fire caused about twenty thousand dollars in damage. Funeral services are planned in Seneca with burial at Mt Hope Cemetery. Survivors include her mother Mary Sellers and several siblings.
Lockport man John G. Stapinski, 23, is held in LaSalle County Jail on a temporary kidnaping charge after allegedly forcing David Drysdale, 32, at gunpoint to drive to Joliet. Police tracked a 1971 Dodge wagon and stopped the suspect at I 55 and US 6. Bond and formal charges to follow in LaSalle County Circuit Court.
Grundy County Chamber of Commerce hosts Meet Your Candidates in Morris at 7 30 p m in First National Bank community room. Seven of nine aldermanic hopefuls will attend. format includes opening statements and audience Q A with candidates. Primary on February 25 will nominate four aldermen, one per ward.
Frank Grindstaff sixteen of Wauponsee Township was returned to the Ottawa Detention Home Sunday after being found asleep in a trailer by Grundy County deputies at the Robert Doss residence on Route 5. He had escaped the detention home six weeks earlier and was taken to Grundy County Jail before again being placed in Ottawa Detention Home.
Nicolino Carnevale sold a 104-foot sandwich weighing 160 pounds to raise funds for the Desert Hospital Development Fund. The sandwich held 175 pounds of meat and cheese, 38 pounds of peppers, 40 pounds of lettuce, 1,248 hot peppers, and three gallons of dressing. Entertainer Sonny Bono auctioned two six inch end pieces for 100 dollars before about 4,000 spectators. Carnevale sought Guinness World Records recognition and promised to reveal the bun baking secret once his submission is complete.
