Nation narrows pass through crippling winter storm toll

The Associated Press reports 142 deaths across the nation from a weekend blizzard stretching from Mississippi to Maine. Cold, heavy snows halted traffic and suspended business in many cities while New England and upstate New York bore the worst. Atlantic Iowa logged 34 below zero as highs struggled to rise.

Million Dollar Blaze Destroys Dixon Publishing Plant

Fire driven by printers ink razed the Dixon Publishing Co plant in Dixon Illinois. Firemen from Dixon and surrounding areas fought the flames five hours until under control. one firefighter injured. Equipment including four presses and 10 linotype machines destroyed. The plant employed about 80 people. cause likely heating system.

Conant urges ability grouping in US high schools

Dr James B Conant says schools should group students by talent across about 15 to 20 percent of gifted pupils and 10 to 15 percent who struggle. He calls for specialized instruction for slower students with reading and math difficulties and for teachers trained for this work.

Airport contract awarded for Morris Municipal project

Charles O'Brien and Son Morris have been awarded a $26 600 45 contract by the Illinois Department of Aeronautics for Morris Municipal Airport. The work includes grading drainage base construction and bituminous surface for runway and taxiway extension plus a medium intensity runway lighting system. Beginning as soon as weather permits.

Fire Hits Waukegan Chemical Plant Damages Large

Waukegan Illinois. Nitro Chemical Co fire in a two story facility caused an estimated 300000 to 400000 dollars in damage. About 200 firefighters fought the blaze in 12 degree below zero weather. Fireman Philip Sedar was overcome by smoke and hospitalized. Civil defense and nearby North Chicago crews stood by. Cause of the blaze was not determined.

Beardedown Illinois Jaycees named Arthur J. Cording 34 of Galena as the state's outstanding young farmer. He farms 868 acres a beef herd of 43 cows plus feeder stock on 213 acres of pasture and serves as a church deacon and Sunday school teacher. Second place went to William S. Stetson Milan nominated by Moline Jaycees. Third place to Wayne Friedrichs sponsored by Sterling Jaycees.

Three Plainfield Boy Scouts earned their Polar Bear awards during a 24 hour outdoor test at the Boy Scout Reservation. About 15 scouts plus leaders camped overnight, with the three awardees not in the worship group and still thawing out after the event.

The Grundy County Farm Bureau held its annual meeting in Center School gym naming township chairmen including Vienna Bill Harley and Aux Sable Emmett Tabler among others. US and Britain Offer Mediation in French Tunisian Crisis

Paris reports Paris and Tunis both accepted a mediation offer from the United States and Britain to settle the French Tunisian dispute. The proposal was presented to French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau and Tunisian leaders after Habib Bourguiba announced a new U N Security Council demand over the Sakiet Sidi Youssef air raid. The Security Council debate is planned for Tuesday.
