Morris Herald Wins 1958 Inland Typographical Award
The Morris Herald earned first place in Class A at the Inland Daily Press Association contest held at the Drake Hotel, Chicago. Publisher Tom West accepted the plaque as the newspaper’s staff contributed to its eye catching, legible edition. 247 newspapers entered across five divisions. Wisconsin and Illinois dominated top prizes.

Frigid Weekend Outlook For Grundy County Area
The weather forecast calls for sub freezing temperatures in Grundy county tonight through Wednesday. After a high in the 40s today temperatures dip to about 20 tonight and near 30 on Tuesday with further cold conditions and possible snow flurries Wednesday. Pyatt Weather Station reported 32/28 with 0.8 inches of precipitation Saturday evening.

Giant 300ton Reactor Vessel Begins 3600mile Coastal Trip
A 25 day voyage begins for a 300 ton nuclear reactor vessel bound for Dresden eight miles east of Morris. Barge from Camden, New Jersey will travel to Fort Myers Florida then along the Gulf coast and intracoastal canal to New Orleans. From there it travels up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers to the Dresden site where it will power an 180000 kilowatt plant built for Commonwealth Edison Co and Nuclear Power Group by General Electric Co for 45000000 dollars. Commonwealth Edison pays 30000000 dollars and operates the plant while Nuclear Power Group covers the remaining 15000000 as R and D.

James C Thorpe of Rock Island, age 19, was stopped for speeding and given a ticket by a radar patrolman. He sped away in a reckless manner, was pursued, and received a second ticket after a chase.

Whiting Man Fined For Washington Street Crash Injuring Two
Jackie Goss of 1305 W Fred St Whiting Ind was fined 50 dollars plus costs for driving too fast for conditions after his car lost control struck a utility pole and two passengers were injured. James Kendall and Melvin Tibbs sustained facial cuts and Tibbs also scalp lacerations. Kendall and Tibbs were treated at the hospital. Goss was treated and released. Officers Strum Gregg and Ward investigated and charged Goss.

1958 License Plates Seem To Vanish
Illinois 1958 plates were scarce on Morris streets Sunday while many cars ran without plates. The deadline for 1958 plates was Feb 15 per Secretary of State Charles Carpentier. Some cars wore 1959 plates, others had none. Morris warns Feb 20 is deadline to display 1959 vehicle tax stickers at City Clerk Arthur Stinchecomb's office.

Flooded Grundy Will county areas evacuated as ice jam blocks bridge
Flood waters from the Kankakee and Illinois rivers crest Sunday and recede today while Grundy and Will counties keep inundated east areas. An ice gorge near the Will-Grundy line bridge remains a hazard. Evacuations began Saturday and residents cannot yet return. Plant workers at Dresden Nuclear Power and Illinois Clay Products use long detours as access roads stay underwater. State troopers man roads to keep non residents out of flooded zones. Workers at Illinois Clay Products were evacuated by high wheeled truck through about 242 feet of water.

Under Tom West guidance the Grundy County Community Chest distributed 12 500 from the 1958 drive with checks mailed to participating agencies. Final totals show Boy Scouts 5253.12 Girl Scouts 2864.38 4 H 1665 Catholic Charities 614 Pleasant View Luther Home 327.62. A closing date of May 1 1959 is set for donations with possible additional distributions if funds allow. An April 13 board meeting will elect officers and set drive leadership.
