Joe Berta Ill Named to State Post

Joe Berta Ill 53 of Maine Township named state superintendent of Illinois Agriculture Division of Soil and Water Conservation. He will begin duties Saturday and administer 98 districts across 102 counties from Springfield. He previously served as district director in Grundy County and is a director of the Mazon Elevator Cooperative and Coal City Area Club. He will not move to Springfield immediately.

Bank to Sell Car Licenses Saturday

Grundy County National Bank will sell passenger car plates for renewal registrations with extended hours today until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applicants must show 1998 ID cards or titles and have mounted 1969 plates by midnight Saturday.

Uncertain Weather With Snow Chance Tonight

A dubious forecast notes warmer temperatures tonight under cloudy skies with a possible evening snow mix. The Weather Station reported a Thursday high of 29 degrees and a low of 11, with morning readings near 2 degrees downtown Morris.

Absent ballots counted at city clerk's office

City Clerk Donald Caisley reported 42 absent ballots had been cast by 11:30 a.m. with more applications pending. About half were mail requests and half in person. The deadline for mail ballots is next Thursday and February 22 is final for in person applications.

Peruvian gunboat fires on U S fishing boats off coast

Rep. Thomas M. Pelly says a Peruvian gunboat fired on two U S tuna boats 23 to 40 miles from Peru. One vessel was captured and towed to a Peruvian port while a second escaped toward waters off Ecuador. Nixon aides confirm U S authorities are verifying the report and seeking Navy protection for the crews.
