Prisoners of war return to Clark Air Base Philippines
A total of 143 POWs freed from North and South Vietnam arrived at Clark Air Base in the Philippines aboard three US hospital planes. Navy Captain Jeremiah A. Denton Jr. led the group stepping from the plane, with doctors at the base hospital examining them. The release from Hanoi and Loc Ninh reduced the overall counts of Americans held captive in Vietnam.

Bride's father escapes truck train crash at Morris crossing
One hour before his daughter's 1969 Ford pickup was demolished at Bungalow Road crossing, Vincent Kern of Morris narrowly survived a collision with Rock Island freight No. 97 while en route home from Federal Paper Board. He later attended his daughter's wedding at First United Methodist Church. The incident left the engine damaged but the train could proceed after clearing the tracks. Deputies and train crew reported the near miss occurred at 3 10 p.m. Friday as the train slowed through Morris.

Staten Island Tank Disaster Leaves 26 Bodies Recovered
New York AP reports a large liquid gas storage tank at the Staten Island installation erupted in flames during repairs. Fire Chief John O'Hagan said the blast was not caused by product storage. By Sunday morning 26 bodies were recovered from the 61 foot deep pit, many burned beyond recognition while crews hoisted them in pine coffins. Fire crews work to reach 14 more missing as the cause remains under investigation.
