Prisoners of war return to Clark Air Base Philippines

A total of 143 POWs freed from North and South Vietnam arrived at Clark Air Base in the Philippines aboard three US hospital planes. Navy Captain Jeremiah A. Denton Jr. led the group stepping from the plane, with doctors at the base hospital examining them. The release from Hanoi and Loc Ninh reduced the overall counts of Americans held captive in Vietnam.

Bride's father escapes truck train crash at Morris crossing

One hour before his daughter's 1969 Ford pickup was demolished at Bungalow Road crossing, Vincent Kern of Morris narrowly survived a collision with Rock Island freight No. 97 while en route home from Federal Paper Board. He later attended his daughter's wedding at First United Methodist Church. The incident left the engine damaged but the train could proceed after clearing the tracks. Deputies and train crew reported the near miss occurred at 3 10 p.m. Friday as the train slowed through Morris.

Mazon Township approves unit school district in vote

Unofficial results show 601 to 311 in favor of forming a unit district within the Mazon Township High School area. The district will educate K–12 including Mazon K and Gades, with Kinsman Verona and part of Goodfarm included. Precinct tallies favored the measure in 432 to 102, while two other precincts opposed it.

Board to act on salaries at Morris Community High School

Morris Community High School Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday to adopt a new professional growth policy and review salary schedules for 1973 74 for teachers custodians secretaries administration and cafeteria personnel. An executive session precedes the open meeting with 6 30 p.m. department visitation and 7 to 7 45 p.m. lay on the agenda. Inter district curriculum studies and potential associate membership in Grundy County Chamber of Commerce also on tap. A Student Council presentation on a different study hall plan is planned.

Verona youth killed in Wisconsin

Stephen Alan Stitt age 20 of rural Verona died Friday at St Joseph Hospital Marshield Wisconsin from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

County Appraisals Set by United Appraisal Co

Don Brown and three colleagues from United Appraisal Co of Cleveland will lead a mass Grundy County reappraisal starting in April from Kansas City. The effort targets all commercial properties and about 20 light industries to standardize valuations at 50 percent of market value. Field work ends in June, data processing in July, notices issued in August, with informal hearings offered but not influencing formal appeals.

Staten Island Tank Disaster Leaves 26 Bodies Recovered

New York AP reports a large liquid gas storage tank at the Staten Island installation erupted in flames during repairs. Fire Chief John O'Hagan said the blast was not caused by product storage. By Sunday morning 26 bodies were recovered from the 61 foot deep pit, many burned beyond recognition while crews hoisted them in pine coffins. Fire crews work to reach 14 more missing as the cause remains under investigation.

Newark Grade School tax referendum defeated again

Newark District 66 voters rejected a proposed tax hike by 140 votes with 305 against and 165 for among 473 ballots. three spoiled. The plan would have raised the rate from 0.92 to 1.22, adding about 153,345 dollars, to bolster the district's finances after a December defeat by nine votes.

School Board to Meet Tuesday at Franklin School

The Morris Grade School Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin School. The finance committee will present a recommendation on an administrative contract renewal. Reports due cover remedial reading, the forced entry of Shabbona School, unit study committee, joint district curriculum and a government task force. The building committee will report on industrial arts and a tentative 1973 74 school calendar will be presented for approval.

Junior women assist with Grundy Heart Drive 1973

The Morris Junior Woman's Club will aid the Grundy County Heart Association drive with a goal of $8,000. Mrs Bruce Deist named area chairman to select captains who will recruit volunteers to collect donations during Heart Week February 18 to 25. Contact Mrs Deist by Thursday at 942-2542.
