County Boards Weigh Weighted Vote System in Illinois

Lake County will test a weighted vote plan in court to keep current township numbers and preserve one man one vote. If legal, Grundy County may adopt the system. if not, reapportionment could cut supervisors and redraw townships.

Avco Subdiary Wins WRTH Radio Station in Wood River Sale

The Federal Communications Commission approves the sale of WRTH Wood River Illinois to a subsidiary of Avco Corp. Madison County Broadcasting Co. will receive between 3 095 000 and 3 345 000 depending on recent ratings. Avco owns four other standard broadcast stations two FM outlets and five TV stations.

Fair skies and colder temperatures expected tonight with a low near 10. Thursday will be mostly sunny and continues cold with a high in the upper 20s. Friday looks fair and warmer. Collins Weather Station reported a Tuesday high of 34 and low of 11, with 9 am at 20 and 11 am at 21 in Morris.

Arrest Youths For Break In At Gardner Texaco Station

Two Joliet youths were arrested in Gardner for a break in at the Gardner Texaco Service Station. Francis Horvat, 19, was detained at the scene by Policeman Christensen around 11 p.m. Ray Lang, 17, fled but was captured about two hours later. Both were jailed in Grundy and Morris City Jails pending charges.

Mary Rita O Connor Dies From Auto Crash Injuries

Mary Rita O Connor sixteen of Peru died from injuries suffered in an auto accident Sunday. She had been a patient at St Marys Hospital since the crash on U S 6 east of La Salle.

A Neptune SP2E patrol bomber crashed into a mountain near El Toro Marine Air Station killing seven aboard. Naval reservists from Minneapolis–St Paul on two weeks of active duty training were aboard. Heavy fog delayed rescue as investigators searched the rugged site 70 miles northeast of the base.

Bids Sought on Bridge Projects Near Joliet and Morris

Bids due February 28 at Springfield for a U S 6 bridge over Aux Sable Creek near Morris. Letting is the second of eight for the year by the Division of Highways. Bids also sought to reconstruct the U S 6 and Illinois 53 intersection in Joliet.

Rumor Sirhan May Change Plea to Guilty

Reports circulated that Sirhan Bishara Sirhan might switch his plea to guilty in the RFK assassination. The Times said a life term could be the maximum penalty, with the defendant likely resisting to preserve public air time for his reasons. Defense attorneys met with Sirhan, his mother and brother to discuss the possibility as district attorney Younger hinted at a shorter or longer trial.

Police Chief Arrested in Oak Forest

A state task force arrested Oak Forest Police Chief Oliver Duke Christiansen and two officers, seizing records for two years. Charges include obstructing justice theft by deception and selling pornographic films with alleged involvement of housewives. Abel leads in steelworkers union presidential bid

TI W Abel long a mill worker rose to union top by leading in early returns in the United Steelworkers presidency race. Charge Two Men In Ottawa Stickup

Two men were charged with armed robbery in the February 6 $5,000 stickup at the Mideast Tavern in Ottawa. Arrested Monday, Donald C. Carl 28 of Steger and Milton Segoviano 26 of Chicago Heights are held on $25,000 bond.

4-H Members Head to Moline Farm Tour

Twenty two county 4-H club members departed Morris by bus at 7 a.m. for a tour of a farm implement factory in Moline. This wrap up activity honors their participation in the county tractor care and safety workshops in 1968 with extension adviser Albert Pilch and workshop leader Wesley Steffes guiding them alongside several parents.
