Mrs. R. E. Canaday announced a 12 30 pm gathering of all fund drive captains and workers at Morris hospital to plan a campaign climax on Heart Sunday Feb 28 The list includes numerous captains and volunteers from Morris Coal City Mazon Verona Brienna Felix Garfield Nettle Creek Waupon Goose Lake Aux Sable and South Wilmington with local chairman names attached.
Morris Lions Club presented the Morris Fire Department with a resuscitator that also serves as an inhalator and aspirator at a dinner meeting. Charles Ayers accepted on behalf of the department as Fred Nelson outlined funding from a Firemen's Ball. Gil Clark led a demonstration with Firemen Ray Kindelspire and others showing patient evacuation and equipment use.
New York host Jack Paar abruptly left his NBC program after an on air dispute over a censored anecdote about the letters W C. Viewers reacted with shock and some applaud while others protested the departure. NBC noted the incident occurred about 18 minutes into the taped show.
Argentine warships crippled a submarine hiding in Golfo Nuevo near the naval base and expect its capture within days. Navy officials said the sub surfaces every 48 hours after depth charge and artillery strikes, with U.S. and British forces denying involvement. This marks a third foreign sub scare in Argentine waters in 21 months.
At noon today a two vehicle crash at Bedford Road and Division Street damaged the front of the eastbound car driven by Harry K. Brown of Hammond Indiana after he extended into the intersection. The southbound Schwarm Service Ohman truck driven by Robert Lee Webb sustained a damaged fender. Officers George Hoge and B O Neal Enger investigated.
Dr Wernher von Braun urged Americans to sacrifice on an unprecedented scale to meet the Soviet challenge. Speaking to about 1,300 people in Belleville Illinois he warned that the space age could bring success or catastrophe and urged better math and science education and higher teacher salaries to prepare the nation for space leadership.
Governor William G. Stratton announced the appointment of rural Morris resident Paul Hatcher as superintendent of the farm machinery exhibits at the Illinois State Fair in August.
Irene Marie Robbins formerly Ruth Crum, a California mother of four, received a full pardon from Governor Stratton in Illinois after 18 years since a 1938 burglary tie. She had served a reformatory term, left the state on parole violation, and later built a community role before the pardon ended years of fear.
Identical twins Jack and Gene Brennan have long been mistaken for each other as they live on opposite sides of town. With Austin renaming streets, Jack moves to 1916 4th Ave. NE and Gene to 1916 4th Ave. NW, changing earlier addresses at 2006 E Water St and 1806 W Grove.
Sen George D. Aiken and several Democrats praised the U S proposal for a nuclear test ban though some doubted it would break the Geneva deadlock. Soviet reaction was cautious with Tsarapkin saying the plan cannot seed agreement while U S officials hoped for a stance shift after study. The plan seeks to ban sea and air blasts and large underground detonations with limited initial underground tests and possible later extensions.
A barn at the William Wollgast farm in Goodfarm township was wiped out by fire of undetermined origin at 10:15 p m Thursday. Dwight and Mazon fire departments could not save the structure though the Wollgast family drove out most livestock. Firemen protected nearby buildings.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts a sunny but cold day today with a high in the low 20s and a near zero low tonight. It was 7 degrees below zero at Collins station Thursday night after a daytime high of 23, and at 9 am today the temperature was 12 degrees.
