Labor Secretary Goldberg urges bipartisan action on recession

Arthur J. Goldberg arrived in Chicago to press Kennedy economic plans. He told Mayor Daley and business and labor leaders that cooperation is needed to restore production and employment. He said Congress must approve the 1.2 billion emergency aid program to speed relief to long term unemployed.

President and Attorney General seek 59 new federal judgeships

President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy asked Congress to create 59 additional federal judgeships to reduce backlog. They urged action on a bill expanding district courts by 50 and appeals courts by 9, noting no new positions in seven years and rising litigation.

Marilyn Monroe Hospital Stay Not Expected To Last

A New York spokesman said Marilyn Monroe, 34, was admitted to Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic for rest and recuperation after a busy year completing two films and facing marital problems. Her condition is reported as satisfactory and the stay is not expected to be prolonged.

Forced Landing Avoids Serious Injury Near Wheeling

A two engine light airplane made a forced landing in a cornfield shortly after takeoff from Pal-Waukee Airport near Wheeling Illinois. Sherman Dickholtz and his wife Lorna of Skokie Lloyd Churchman and his wife Jean of Chicago escaped with facial cuts and shock and were taken to a Park Ridge hospital for treatment.

Fourth Annual Band Festival Set for Sunday in School Gym

The Morris Area Band festival returns at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Mazon Verona Kinsman high school gym with high school bands led by directors including Gerald Eisold. Participating groups Coal City Gardiner South Wilmington Marseilles Seneca Minooka Mazon Morris, each conductor directing the concert band. The Symphonic band under Thomas Fabish performs six numbers while the Concert band plays a set of marches and symphonic pieces. The two bands join for a final combined performance of Normal.

Will Organize Community Choir Here

A community choir directed by Charles Southard will meet at 2 30 p m Sunday in the First Methodist church for its first rehearsal. The group plans an Easter cantata on Palm Sunday evening and invites all who enjoy singing to attend, regardless of previous choir membership.

Heart Days for Business Under Way in Morris

A Morris Heart Fund drive for 1961 is under way led by Arthur R. Leach with a goal to finish by Wednesday. Dr. Sidney Liedman notes about 20 local business volunteers will visit downtown offices stores and centers to solicit contributions. Leach cites heart disease as a major economic drain causing untold human suffering and loss of production.
