The National Association of Secondary School Principals committee urges a complete shift from grammar focused study to learning the language by ear and speaking. They advocate starting in seventh grade with four years of elective courses emphasizing conversation before grammar. Principals welcomed the plan but asked where to find teachers and how to fit it into crowded schedules.
Joseph Ryder Harry E Brown and Ray Hutchings were renominated as Republican candidates at Morris township caucuses held Monday night. Township election on April 7, GOP voters 66 braved the elements in six precincts from 7 to 8 pm. Central Committee met at 8:30 pm to canvass votes and announce results.
World Day of Prayer observed at 2 p.m. Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church with leaders from seven Morris churches. Offerings support missions at home and abroad and local committee members coordinate the service written by Egyptian Christian women. Observances span 144 countries in six continents with 60 languages and a global prayer chain beginning in Tonga.
Mayor Donald Caisley proposed forming a Morris City Planning Commission described as overdue. A kickoff meeting with a University of Illinois speaker is planned for March 6 with council members urged to attend. The plan requires council approval and would involve multiple local organizations and city funds to operate effectively.
More than 1,000 people attended the Morris Community High School gym for the second Morris Area Band Festival. Bands from Mazon Morris Minooka Seneca and Wilmington high schools performed under guest conductor Bruce Houseknecht of Joliet Township High School.
The Morris Community High School board will meet at 7 30 p.m. today in the school office for its regular February meeting.
Tokyo reports April 10 as the chosen wedding date for Crown Prince Akihito and Michiko Shoda. The ceremony will be in the palace sanctuary with 600 guests mostly kept outside the sanctuary. Emperor Hirohito and the Empress will not attend as per tradition.
Mrs Amos Edmunds of 1350 Lisbon Street was taken to Morris hospital after a fall on the ice at her residence. X rays are being used to assess a back injury. Earlier Charles Miney, 16, of Seneca, was admitted for head injury evaluation after an ice fall. he is related to hospital employee Mrs Catherine Chapman.
Don Gilbert 46 chief of the New York bureau for the Canadian Press collapsed during stomach surgery in White Plains New York. He had spent about 30 years in top news posts in Canada and abroad and led the New York bureau since 1952.
Arthur Bozue secured the Republican nomination for Garfield Township supervisor at the Gardner Legion Club caucus with 55 votes to 45 for Lewis Severson. George F. Johnson ran unopposed for commissioner. Attendance reached 100.
President Eisenhower announced Secretary of State Dulles will miss weeks due to a hernia operation at Walter Reed. Dulles, 70, will recuperate about two weeks, but the President expects him to return to help shape U.S. Germany policy and foreign affairs as Western talks with the Soviet Union proceed.
Severe weather struck Crawford County with a tornado near Oblong and Palestine injuring a trailer resident, unroofing buildings and overturning garages. Snow and freezing rain followed as north snow and south sleet produced hazardous roads and power outages across the region.
A tornado struck St Louis at 2 12 am damaging homes and tenements in Brentwood and Crestwood before moving into the city. Nineteen known dead with 265 injured and authorities fear the toll may rise to thirty. Most victims were African American, with seven children among the dead. City facilities and hospitals faced overload as responders battled wreckage and power outages.
