Gov. Stratton says local officials should remove slot machines from private clubs and warns state authorities to act if counties fail. He notes racketeering risk, cites metropolitan areas, and says state police may be used if needed. He links machines to corruption and economic drain despite charitable receipts.
Subcommittee chairman says Bernard Schwartz is still counsel after a closed meeting. Claims he faces ouster over expense accounts for New York trips while Schwartz says powerful interests seek to block a probe of federal regulatory agencies and alleges connections to White House aides and cabinet members.
A special Saturday airlift financed by Lyle Claypool of Morris carried 400 pounds of animal feed to aid pheasants and coveys of quail in frigid weather. Claypool and state conservation officer James Darkhuff urged farmers to continue feeding wildlife, noting ground snow prevents foraging and threatens survival. The feed, packed in 10 pound bags, was delivered by a chartered plane piloted by Frank Hensen. Claypool's 11 year old son Philip accompanied him.

Dr. Paul Talalay, German born biochemist at the University of Chicago, is pleased and humble about a 1 million grant to fund his salary and research on sex hormones and enzymes. The grant, part of a 110 million national allocation in 1957, was announced at a national meeting as plans emerged for a 30 million fund drive.
The region endures a cold spell with temperatures four to six degrees below normal for five days. Weekend highs reached 13 with lows eight below. Sunday moved from nine above to six below. Forecasts show continued cold with a high near 10 today and near 15 Tuesday, with mostly cloudy skies and little temperature change Wednesday.
Henry P. Briscoe Tavern bartender Harvey Olson faced Justice W L Dix on a charge of selling intoxicating liquor to a minor. Seamen, age 20 or 22 per dispute, testified as the case was continued 10 days with $200 cash bond furnished by Olson's employer. The matter follows arrests of four youths for disorderly conduct at the Paramount Roller rink.
ASUNCION Paraguay President Alfredo Stroessner and 60 members of Congress were returned to office in a nationwide plebiscite. They ran unopposed in Sunday balloting. Stroessner heads the Colorado Red party, Paraguay's only legal party.
Grundy County outlines a step by step courthouse improvement with priority on roof and coping. Architecture firm Krueger Wilkins Healy and Moore Joliet prepared plans approved by the County Board of Supervisors. Base proposal covers roof repair including sealing and skylight removal with concrete infill and ventilation. Alternate bids address tuck point work as funds permit.
Donald G. Farrell a 23 year old from the Bronx enters a 3 by 5 foot space cabin at the School of Space Medicine for a six day simulated voyage to the moon. He will test physiological and psychological responses under controlled conditions with outside scientists monitoring his status.
Thirteen senators led by Douglas introduce a bill to promote school integration and enforce Supreme Court rulings. It would authorize 12.5 million dollars over five years for community understanding and planning, plus 40 million dollars yearly for school buildings and related costs. The measure envisions federal and attorney general action to secure compliance and take injunctions against civil rights violations if voluntary efforts fail.
There will be a circuit court hearing Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. on the appeal of Phillip C. Collins et al vs Grundy County Board of School Trustees and Sara toga Consolidated School District No. 600 with Lillies K Walker county superintendent. Judge Howard Ryan to preside. The petition from April 8 seeking reestablishment of the Conklin school district was denied.
