Miami hijack thwarted as two held in arrest

A Miami landing ended a hijack attempt by Michael Peparo 18 and Tamsin Fitzgerald 18 both arrested on air piracy and kidnapping charges. Peparo carried a knife and mosquito repellant targeting a Cuba bound flight with 93 on board. a second jet avoided detour after the pilot questioned the threat.

Illinois Supreme Court halts death sentence for Carpentersville woman

The Illinois Supreme Court reduced Veronica Crews's death sentence to 20 to 35 years for killing her two year old foster daughter Lisa. Convicted in 1966, she had received death sentences from Kane County Circuit Court twice. Crews has been at Dwight State Reformatory since July 14, 1966 and had no prior criminal record.

Joliet Junior College District 525 Buys Land for New Campus

Joliet Junior College District 525 purchased about 370 acres south of Joliet Municipal Airport for 2 000 per acre from the Theodore and John Richards families. The site includes woods a lake and a stream and may expand by 60 acres later. Phase I aims to house 1 550 students with first classes in 1971 and total enrollment projected at 6 500 within seven years. The state covers 75 percent of construction costs with bonds and local tax levies funding temporary housing already in use. District 525 spans Will Grundy and Kendall counties.

Fair conditions tonight with lows near 15 to 20 degrees. Wednesday projects mostly sunny with a high in the lower 30s. Thursday looks partly cloudy and warmer. Collins Weather Station records a high of 29 and a low of 5. At 9 am today Morris reported 17 degrees and at 10 50 am downtown 22 degrees.

Plan to Tow Pueblo Recalled by Navy Admiral

Rear Adm. George L. Cassell testified that two senior Navy officers ordered a destroyer to be positioned off Wonsan Harbor in international waters and ready to recover or tow the Pueblo if needed. The plan included air cover and possible harbor entry to regain the ship, with other options considered to prevent classified material from falling into North Korean hands. Lt. Edward R. Murphy Jr. testified as the first Pueblo crew member in open court.

Bloodmobile collects 47 pints in six hour visit

Forty seven pints were collected during a six hour American Red Cross bloodmobile visit to the First Baptist Church in Morris. Sixty registered, thirteen rejected, with 12 first time donors. Pins earned for long donations and multiple volunteers supported the drive. Two more visits are planned this fiscal year to Morris, with additional stops in Coal City and Mazon.

Mayor Joseph Trainor vetoed city pay raises for himself and 10 aldermen after the council approved increases to the mayor's salary from 5000 to 4800 and aldermen from 600 to 800 annually. He said funds should go to city equipment and regular fulltime employees.

Caterpillar Man Appointed to New Defense Job

Washington AP Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird named Roger T. Kelley a new defense manpower specialist to modernize the military pay system. Kelley, 50, formerly with Caterpillar Tractor Co. of Peoria Illinois, will be assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs. He directed worldwide personnel programs for Caterpillar and served as a Navy officer in World War II. His appointment awaits Senate confirmation and aims to bring military compensation in line with other government jobs to reduce draft reliance.

Power Outage Delays Radio Commercials in Honolulu

Donn Tyler and engineers worked to finish radio spots when a power outage left them in the dark for about a half hour. The outage prevented Hawaiian Electric Co. from airing the commercials on schedule.

Couple Held After Help Note Found Near Dwight Restroom

A St. Louis man and a Chicago woman were taken into questioning after a note asking for police contact was found in a restroom at a Coffeehouse on U S 66 near Dwight Illinois. Thelma Jones 20 of Chicago and Samuel Talkton 35 of St. Louis were stopped on U S 66 and held at state police headquarters while federal agents arrive. A 1968 navy blue Cadillac was linked to the case and the gunman was described as armed with a sawed off shotgun. No charges filed yet.

Witness Seeks Immunity in Shaw Trial

The defense asks the court to grant immunity from prosecution for Mrs. Harold McMaines of Des Moines as a potential defense witness.
