Peking Radio claimed Mao Tse tung has seized Heilungkiang Province in a bloody struggle with an anti-Mao party chief aiding. Morris Public Library opens record service collection

Storm Passes Area Keeps Roads Open After Panic Prep

Predictions of heavy snow did not materialize in Grundy County as residents bought staples like milk bread eggs and potatoes. A light sleet snow and rain fell Wednesday night. Stores in Morris reported grocers restocking while deliveries remained on schedule. The U S Weather Service forecast subzero to ten above temperatures under clear skies and northern Illinois saw 4 to 7 inches of snow from the week twice.

Haas Wins SAR Award at Morris Community High School

Bill Haas 18, son of Mr and Mrs George Haas of Morris Route 4, named winner of the Sons of the American Revolution award at Morris Community High School for citizenship. Haas presides over the National Honor Society, is a National Merit semifinalist, Illinois State semifinalist, Illinois Boys State representative, and active in Em-Hi Quill and Scroll Thespians German Club and Latin Club with plans to study law at Northwestern University.

Committee Approves $6 Billion Rise in Debt Limit

Washington AP reports the House Ways and Means Committee backed a $6 billion increase raising the national debt ceiling to $336 billion. The panel rejected a Republican amendment expanding the Johnson administration fundraising. Treasury said $7 billion was ideal but could accept the lower figure. Secretary Fowler warned some payments might be delayed without higher borrowing power. Rep. Byrnes indicated he may revisit the amendment on House floor.

Johnson orders two million ton grain aid for India

President Johnson told Congress of an immediate allocation of two million tons of grain worth about 159 million dollars to help India meet emergency food needs. He outlined a 10 million ton annual requirement with 6.6 million tons from the United States and 3.4 million tons from other nations, with a condition that part of the long term 6.6 million ton commitment be matched by others.

Meeting Tonight On Jr. College Proposal

An informative meeting on the proposed Class I junior college for Grundy Kendall Will County will be at 8 p m today in the Morris Savings and Loan building. The storm caused last week’s center cancellation. A referendum on the proposal is set for February 18 in the area. The local committee says the meeting will run no more than one hour.
