Illinois will extend unemployment benefits for about 2 600 jobless workers starting February 15 as two successive months of high unemployment meet the threshold. The emergency program offers 5 to 13 extra weeks based on prior compensation, with totals now at about 315 000 unemployed in the state and weekly claims rising.
Andrew Sorem who built a Morris shoe business over 57 years retires as Sorem Bootery at 220 Liberty Street passes to Ronald Sykes, longtime salesman and new proprietor. Sorem began in 1924 with John Hynds and plans a long rest and travel with wife Katherine living at 321 E Jefferson St.
William Patient Morris was elected president of the Grundy County Young Republican Organization at a Wednesday night meeting. Officers include James Peacock Morris vice president Carol Carlson Morris secretary Don Beiers Morris treasurer Parker Robinson Morris Mrs LeRoy Tomastick Gardner and Richard Wilder Morris with the next meeting set for Wednesday March 8.
Morris Township Republicans report a full slate with no contests as filing closes. Eight precinct caucuses will list Ray Hansen for county supervisor Tony Helling for township clerk Anna Wilson for assessor and Cryer Day Horton for the three auditor seats. Democratic officials say no caucus will be held.
Ottawa Illinois reports delays in selecting a jury for Ches ter Weger charged with murdering three women at Starved Rock State Park. Only four jurors chosen: Mack Park William Rowe Mrs Florence Newman and Mrs Anna Redlich. A third 100 name juror list was summoned as many potential jurors cited biases or health and age issues.
President Kennedy asks Congress for a rapid anti-recession package built on faster federal spending and higher old age pensions plus an emergency extension of unemployment pay. He reports January unemployment at 5.4 million with a 900,000 rise and pledges new proposals within 75 days if conditions do not improve.
President Kennedy outlines actions to revive the economy including FHA rate cuts, extended unemployment aid, expanded unemployment service, area redevelopment, food stamp pilots, school lunch upgrades, Social Security increases, early veterans life insurance dividends, higher minimum wage, faster highway and procurement programs, federal contracts for high unemployment areas, tax reforms, resource and health care conservation, and an advisory committee on labor management.
The town notes Old George failed to see his shadow on Groundhog Day as he emerged from his den near Hatcher's bride west of town. The legend says winter ends when no shadow appears, though the weeks ahead must still prove his forecast right or wrong.
Lawton Oklahoma reports former U S Senator Elmer Thomas 83 chose to serve jury duty though over 65. The panel could not reach a verdict in a felonious assault case leaving the outcome unresolved.
Voters may apply for absentee ballots for Morris Feb 28 primary. Mail applications accepted until Feb 23, in person until Feb 25 at City Hall clerk’s office. Primary features three mayoral candidates, two for city clerk, and alderman contests in three wards.
James C. Worthy resigns as vice president of Sears, Roebuck and Co to lead the newly formed Republican Citizens League of Illinois. Effective February 28, he cites duty to help restore the two party system and improve the GOP’s role in Illinois politics.
The National Farmers Association of Grundy county will observe Charter Night in a meeting at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the circuit court room of the courthouse. Leland Anderson field man for the organization announces the event and invites all Grundy county farmers to attend.
Passengers of the hijacked liner Santa Maria ashore at Recife after 12 days in captivity. The 610-foot ship docked near the Brazilian port as U S citizens opened their homes to about 45 Americans onboard. Police kept crowds back while negotiations with Capt Henrique Galvao continued.
The city of Crest Hill wins a change of venue for two of nine Will County detachment petitions. Judge John C. Cowing orders the two suits moved to Grundy County after John Cirricione, city attorney, requested transfer citing prejudice from a recent city boundary decision involving Hillcrest Shopping Center and Union National Bank trustee for land across from Plainfield Road.
The Weather Bureau described cloudy windy cold conditions with light snow tonight and continuing cold Friday and Saturday though moderating. Snow totals stay under two inches with lows from five to ten degrees above zero and Friday's high around 15. Wednesday's Byron Collins station reached 29 with a night low of eight above.
