Morris high school district eyes 2.5 million addition referendum

On January 12 the Morris Community High School Board adopted a resolution to place a 2.5 million addition bond referendum on February 19. A 250 member lay committee with 25 captains supports a 59,000 square foot expansion including labs, a nurses station, a swimming pool, courts, and a 12th mile indoor track. Polls run noon to 7 pm at four precincts Franklin, Nettle Creek, Saratoga, and Wauponsee.

Trucker reports theft from abandoned semi near Gardner

A trucker from St Louis told Grundy County Deputy Paul Estensen that 12 cases of canned food were stolen from his Food Service Systems Inc semi left on Interstate 55 near Gardner after a weather stoppage. Seven cases had already been recovered for stranded residents.

Juror Selection Starts In Coal City Injury Suit

The December 1974 suit by Donald Francois of Coal City against DMI Inc Standard Oil and Amoco began in Grundy County Circuit Court with jury selection. Francois alleges he rented farm equipment from the defendants and was injured when a platform collapsed while he stood on the machine.

Weather figures show a rare January stay entirely below freezing at Dresden since 1942. Reported lows near -7 degrees on average, with 19 below zero days and a high average of 17.5. Upper air readings indicated 30.12 barometric pressure and winds up to 26 mph.

Fire damages Ivanhoe Restaurant in Chicago

A three alarm fire at 3000 North Clark Street damaged the Ivanhoe Restaurant, collapsing roof sections and injuring none. The blaze started in the kitchen and burned the southeast corner, with firefighters using foam around the theater area as crews worked to control the blaze. The building, a former theater restaurant dating to the 1920s, had reopened as a nightclub last August.

Illinois ICC declares 15 day moratorium on residential disconnects

The Illinois Commerce Commission will formalize a 15 day moratorium on disconnecting residential utilities for nonpayment. ICC Chairman Marvin Leiberman said he secured support from commissioners and asked gas and electric utilities to voluntary suspend shutoffs during the extreme cold weekend. The measure follows emergency provisions and takes effect today.

Judge seals FBI tapes of King surveillance for 50 years

Three Die As Fire Ravages Pacific Hotel Chicago

Three men died when a blaze swept through the Pacific Hotel on Chicago's Near North Side. Fire officials estimated 75 thousand dollars in damages and said the fire started on the second floor. Authorities opened an arson probe but did not determine a cause.

Trucker Helped Rescue Woman From Bridge Beam

Two unidentified truck drivers and three police officers saved a 30 year old Mound City woman found unconscious on a 4 foot wide bridge support beam 100 feet above the Mississippi River near Cairo. The rescue took about 30 minutes in 8 degree weather with ropes and handcuffs used to secure her.

Frostbite Victims In Newark Stranded North Of Morris

Elmer Buchanan 21 and Cynthia 20 of Rte 1 Newark remained in fair condition at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet after frostbite. The couple were stranded in their car near Five Corners north of Morris and reached Chester Hoganson’s residence on Saratoga Rd. They forced entry as the home was cold and phone out of service. They stayed 48 hours until found by Russell Olson of Lisbon. They were moved from Morris Hospital to St. Joseph Hospital for care by a plastic surgeon.

Airport study grant slated for approval

James Peterson of the joint county city airport committee reported a $28,000 comprehensive airport study grant should be approved by end of March. A & E Engineering of Indianapolis will conduct the study with FAA approval expected this quarter. city and county will cover $1,800 to $2,400 of the cost.
