The Joliet Army Ammunition Plant housing near Elwood and Wilmington, once for APSA personnel, is now fully occupied by military families. Forty seven homes opened, with two vacancies soon to be filled, in two areas Brown Circle near Elwood and another near Wilmington School District Joliet area. Homes range two to five bedrooms, mostly frame-type with two brick units, and on post services including police fire snow removal.

TV Station Heads to Braceville For Gas Crisis Update
Action 7 of WLS TV will be at Oster's gas station in Braceville at noon Monday after Mrs. Duane Oster reported she lost gas following a Jan. 12 outage. She has since received 425 gallons for school buses and 2000 gallons from her brother-in-law’s bulk plant, leaving gas mainly for emergencies.

Quake hits Izmir causing damage and casualties
A predawn earthquake in Izmir lasting about six seconds leveled buildings and caused panic among about one million residents. Police report two killed and 35 injured, five critically, with a man and wife dying in a collapsed home and others injured by falling debris. Buildings, cars, schools, banks and hospitals sustained damage. The Kandilli Observatory gave a 5.2 magnitude on the Richter scale.

A three year-old named Brian Keith Carlberg was found in Plattville Creek near his home by neighbor Richard Naden after his mother reported him missing. He died from an apparent drowning around 4 p.m. in two feet of water.

The Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa affirmed the Grundy County Circuit Court conviction of John Barnes for selling marijuana to a minor. The court rejected a challenge to the Cannabis Control Act alleging equal protection and held the prosecutor’s charging election did not create a constitutional deficiency. Barnes, 23, of Rock Island and Silvis, received 360 days in a penitentiary after a June 1 sentencing for delivering marijuana to James Garvin, 17, on August 30, 1972.

Man Survives Golden Gate Bridge Jump
John W. Adams a 21 year old Stanford student survived a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco landing on an embankment 190 feet below. He was hospitalized Thursday night with no serious injuries and doctors said a possible shoulder separation may have occurred.
