Oxygen-Filled Space Cabin Disaster Kills Two Airmen

In a Brooks Air Force Base simulated space cabin filled with pure oxygen a fire killed Airman 2 C William F Bartley Jr and Airman 3 C Richard G Harmon during a 60 day rabbit blood study. The incident follows the Apollo 1 fire at Cape Kennedy last Friday.

20 Car Safety Requirements

Washington reports the Commerce Department will impose safety rules for cars starting January 1. Requirements include labeled essential controls with belt restraint access, automatic transmission left-to-right sequence, hydraulic brake hose standards, restricted reflective surfaces in driver view, outside mirrors for limited inside mirror vision, an impact absorbing steering system inside the cabin, and a five inch limit on steering gear intrusion during crashes.

List of 20 safety standards for vehicles

The text enumerates 20 required safety features for automobiles. Items include reinforced windshields, shatter resistant glass, shoulder and seat belts, removal of hub caps, rupture-proof fuel tanks, defrosters, two speed wipers with defined wiping area, parking and service brakes with warning light, specified lights, interior padding, and crash safe door latching mechanisms.

Settlement Reached In Joliet Teachers Strike

A spokesman said Joliet teacher strike has been settled with talks continuing for full agreement. Classes resume at Joliet East West Central High Schools and Joliet Junior College at 10 am. The Ecumenical Council met with the School Board and Local 240 after 300 teachers walked out. The injunction requires return to classes, with a hearing set for Thursday.

Grundy County Corn Festival set for 1968 in Illinois Sesquicentennial year

The Grundy County Corn Festival will be held October 4 through 6, 1968, tying into Illinois Sesquicentennial events. Morris Chamber of Commerce announced the plan after a courthouse meeting with local mayors, the state commission, and sesquicentennial leaders.

Vicious orange cat captured after assault in Morris area

A 15 to 20 pound orange cat that bit three children in the Bradley Subdivision south of Morris was captured at 5 30 p m Tuesday and held under observation for 10 days at Morris Veterinary Hospital. Children bitten include 12 year old Steven Cook and David Fannin. If the cat survives the observation and no one claims it, it may be destroyed. Sheriff Pierce assisted in transporting the animal.

Assembly approves bus transport amendment for parochial students

MADISON Wis AP state assemblymen approve a constitutional amendment by 91 to 8 to permit the transportation of parochial and private school children on public buses.

Judge Denies Speck Trial Move to Peoria

Chicago AP reports Circuit Court Judge Herbert C. Paschen rejected a motion to transfer Richard F. Speck’s murder trial from Peoria. He tentatively set February 13 for trial on charges of killing eight student nurses in Chicago on July 14, 1966.
