USDA changes farm definition to $1,000 sales
The Agriculture Department shifts to a new farm definition of at least $1,000 in annual sales, estimating about 2.33 million farms in early 1979, down from 2.37 million a year earlier. The change excludes many smaller units and complicates comparisons with past counts while Census will still tabulate all farms. The new figure also shows average farm size rising to about 450 acres and total land in farms near 1.05 billion acres.

Urinometer misleads on diabetes test claims
Peterson said the device sold as a sugar test for urine does not measure sugar but urine density and cannot diagnose diabetes or guide therapy. FDA asked Brothers Scientific Products, Inc. to recall the device, which is marketed as a cheaper substitute for paper test strips. About 15,000 to 20,000 are on the market, distributed mainly to pharmacies and sold in stores and by mail order.
