Morris City Council again rejects the low $87,846.40 bid from James E. McElwain Construction Co. for the Holiday Inn frontage road project amid discussion of available funds from vehicle tax and sales tax sources and potential red ink in the general fund.
U S warplanes struck targets in North Vietnam for a third day with Radio Hanoi claiming a jet was downed in Quant Binh Province as talks in Paris were suspended. U S and North Vietnamese officials cited violations of the 1968 understanding.
Miami reports Mayor John V. Lindsay of New York formerly a Republican until last August announces he seeks the Democratic presidential nomination. He shifts to a contest that could reshape the 1960s political landscape and draw contenders into a new dynamic.
The United States and the USSR plan to exchange space biomedical data and consider sending one or two scientists to work in each other’s laboratories. Co chairs are Dr. Charles A. Formal challenges to nominating petitions were lodged against one Republican and two Democratic candidates for Cook County state attorney. Only Edward V. Hanrahan faced no contest. other petitions by Raymond Berg and Bernard Carey plus Donald Moore faced allegations of forged signatures and missing lawyer certifications. The electoral board includes County Clerk Barrett and judges Comerford and Dunne. Hanrahan faced prior Democratic party removal due to a grand jury indictment over a 1969 police raid.
The Coal City Village Board awarded the library carpeting to Langrass of Aurora for 2100 dollars. Other bids were Ulivi Brothers 2799 and Carpetite 2790. The library on Boardway Street near city hall and post office will be finished by mid January. Narvick Brothers of Morris is the general contractor.

The United States and North Vietnam canceled the next session of the Vietnam peace talks in synchronized actions. The meeting, set for Thursday, would have been the first since December 8. The U S side cited air attacks. North Vietnam protested. Liaison officers may set a new date. U S officials say talks not discontinued. A North Vietnamese spokesman said officers met and exchanged cancellation notes. A Viet Cong spokesman condemned Nixon and the cancellation as pretext to expand the war.

Mike Prindiville reported a shotgun and tool box stolen from his unlocked car, with tools and wrenches valued at about 110 dollars total. A mirror was taken from Barker's Texaco rest room, door locked, unknown value. A minor collision occurred on Liberty Street when Cheryl Claypool backed a Chevrolet pickup into Nancy Henderson's 1967 Oldsmobile.
A bipartisan bill in the Senate would create a three member board to compensate violent crime victims with up to 50000 for medical and funeral costs and lost earnings. It would subsidize state compensation programs and provide 50000 death benefits for police and firefighters in line of duty. The measure, steered by Sen. McClellan, awaits Senate action amid administration hesitation.
