In Saigon the Viet Cong halted the three day Christmas truce early Saturday. U S and South Vietnamese forces resumed combat after a 24 hour cease fire with 111 Viet Cong attacks blamed on the truce violation. US command reported 66 American battlefield deaths this week.
Willie The Actor Sutton, jailed bank robber and escape artist, vows to help youth avoid crime after his Christmas 1952 release from Attica. He says he spent 17 years in prison, has a 169.37 dollar check for prison work, and hopes to speak to groups to steer youngsters away from crime.
The Associated Press reports 209 deaths in the Christmas holiday weekend road toll. Conditions were icy with snow freezing drizzle and rain affecting much of the nation, from the Midwest to the Far West, as the period ran from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday.
James Thompson of Seneca takes oath as acting sheriff to fill the LaSalle County vacancy after the death of Sheriff Floyd L. Conkling. He names Lt. Wayne Hess to lead deputies through November 30, 1970, as funeral services for Conkling are set for Sunday.

A four hour blaze in Kewanee Illinois heavily damaged a block of downtown stores after an explosion at the Kewanee Restaurant. Five two story buildings including a paint store two florists and a jewelry shop were affected. One fireman suffered minor injuries and investigators sought the explosion’s cause as equipment from nearby communities aided Sewanee firefighters.
A two car collision at Ridge Road and U S 126 near Joliet left Mrs Karl Doil 51 treated and released for minor injuries at St Joseph Hospital Joliet She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband Karl Doil 53 The other driver Peter Michelson 27 of Manti Utah and his wife Ann 23 and other passengers were not injured Doil cited for failure to yield right of way Damage totaled about 1500 with Michelson vehicle at 900 and Doil vehicle at 600 Both cars towed from the scene

Jordanian sources report light anti aircraft fire and no Israeli casualties. Jordanian forces also intercepted an Israeli patrol in Southern Jordan. Across the cease fire line in Lebanon and Gaza, shells and sabotage actions are reported with casualties on the Israeli side in the Suez Canal clash where SAM sites were targeted. Nasser met Libyan and Sudanese leaders in Tripoli amid mounting dissatisfaction with the summit’s stance toward Israel.
