Verona Woman Hurt in Crash on Illinois 47

Mrs. Richard Sjostrom, 41, of Verona, was injured in a two car crash on Illinois 47 near Dupont Road by Hume School at 12 30 p m. She was hospitalized with back injuries after her 1965 Mustang was hit by Glenn Reeves 58 of Morris. Reeves vehicle struck her left side causing her to skid 180 feet and hit a tree. both cars were towed, no other injuries reported.

Southeast winds should bring fair, warmer weather Tuesday with a high near 40, followed by partly sunny mild conditions Wednesday. Teen held couple captive as trooper is slain in Greensburg

An 18 year old from Erlanger and a 29 year old from Newport were apprehended after a daytime gun battle that killed state trooper William Rayner near Greensburg Indiana. The elderly Ernstes couple were taken hostage for more than five hours before surrendering with no resistance.

Christmas Holiday Traffic Death Toll Estimated

The National Safety Council estimated 650 to 750 traffic deaths over the Christmas weekend from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. The council noted holiday travel would total about 7.6 billion miles versus 7.3 billion in a nonholiday period.

Coal City youths charged with battery in circuit court

John D. Parkis and Clarence C. Stewart both of Coal City were bound at $1,000 each after a preliminary hearing on battery charges. Officer Richard Scerine and Trooper J K Perona testified as Parkis, on leave from the army, allegedly fled a stop sign and then assaulted the officers during pursuit on Broadway and Division Streets. A tentative trial date was set for the following Wednesday.

Santa stolen from Lisbon Road display in Morris

The Tibbitts family report a stuffed Santa Claus was stolen from their Lisbon Road display planned for the Morris Chamber of Commerce Christmas contest. The theft occurred after 1:30 a.m. with the Santa stuffed with newspapers and possibly discarded by vandals. They ask returning Mr. Whiskers to the residence.

Pair Charged With Violation Of Ruble Rules

Two American youths plead guilty at a Leningrad court to violating Soviet currency regulations. Wortham and Gilmour face prison terms up to eight years for the currency charge and up to three years for theft of a bear statue. Trial expected to last three days amid Soviet legal procedure and full-court public filming.

Grundy County Seals Campaign Raises Over $6 700

The Grundy County Health and Tuberculosis Assn reports 1967 Christmas Seals drive brought in $6 772.20 in six weeks. President Herb Weitz notes the mail campaign reaches county homes and says $1 349.56 remains to meet the goal.

Referendum planned for Coal City High School project

A referendum of about 1.5 million for a new Coal City high school is set for January 7 after a 1964 study by the original board and a 1966 advisory panel. The plan includes a 78,000 square foot building on a 50 acre site near Illinois 113, with 62,500 land cost and added site work.
