Colorado Boys Ranch Inspired by Founders and Boys Town
La Junta Colorado became home to 75 boys after the Colorado Boys Ranch opened in 1961. Judge Mitchel Johns and Judge Hal Chapman led the project with La Junta offering 38 acres and local volunteers raising funds, modeling the facility after Cal Farley’s Ranch and Boys Town. Boys ages 10 to 14 live in dormitories supervised by couples, with high successful retention and low delinquency transfer rates. The ranch raises beef and pork with cattle, horses, hogs, sheep, and goats, and aims to keep youths until age 18 or high school completion. A 19 year old called it home.

TV critic Cynthia Lowry finds NBCs The Sunshine Patriot a two hour drag despite strong cast led by Cliff Robertson in a dual role. The piece stalls with slow pacing padding and a weak finale though Elvis Presleys TV special tops the period ratings and NBC and CBS offer high profile specials.
