Northern Petrochemical Company starts initial testing of its polyethylene unit today with operations to begin within three days. The test covers compressors reactors and related equipment with high pressure checks and safety vent calibration. Venting noise may occur. Startup of three additional lines is planned over the next three months as normal operations reduce venting.
Indian artillery pounded targets in Dacca as East Pakistan’s Pakistani army appeared to make a last stand. Chittagong port fires burned from air and sea bombardment while Red Cross reported resignation of East Pakistani officials seeking protection.
A heavy rain mixed with light wet snow sparked nine accidents across six counties and three cities in Illinois. Virgil Stacy of Morris was injured in a head on collision on Pine Bluff Road near the Mazon River Bridge. Gerald Posutin and Sharon Decker were among others treated for injuries after vehicle rollovers and skids on Minooka and Jugtown Roads. Police logged 15 accidents by 8 a.m. with overpasses and icy bridges blamed. several drivers escaped injury and several cars sustained major damage. State authorities dispatched county crews to spread cinders on slick spots including the Illinois River bridge on Illinois 47 at Morris.
The village will collect discarded Christmas trees for disposal at the city dump. Library carpet bids were opened with Landgrass's of Aurora the low bidder at 2100 dollars, Ulivi Brothers 2799, Carpetite of Morris 2790. Work on the library is 37 percent complete with Narvick Brothers Construction aiming for mid January completion. The board discussed sewer bill questions from Evelyn McCallister and Evelyn Brooks. Commissioner Gerald Pierard said dumping is legal and cited the city attorney.
State's Atty. Richard Wilder and Coroner W. Clark Davis filed nominating petitions Monday for re election. Atty. David F. Root of Morris filed for representative committeeman for the 43rd district. Root is a Republican. Circuit Clerk Robert Williams, also a Republican, filed for his office Monday. Republicans filed for precinct committeemen including S. J. About 150 Hanover Park residents sue the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago claiming air pollution controls hinder recreation and that emissions from the district plant have caused exterior paint to discolor and peel.
The Morris City Council unanimously votes to hold a bond referendum for Arm strong N Liberty and Lisbon street improvements funded by motor fuel taxes or general obligation bonds. A 10 inch Lisbon Street water main project from Bedford Road to George Street is authorized, not to exceed 25000, funded by water funds, with bids to be opened Dec 27.
Coal City district 7-0 approves filing with the IRS to seek a ruling on 52 days of retroactive teacher pay under new contracts. The board reviews Senate Bill 694 suspensions, considers three to four students, and votes 7-0 to approve building fund payments and to hire staff including a crossing guard and a special education work program participant.
Deadline is Wednesday for the Morris Home Decorating Contest. James Garling invites residents to enter in three categories window or entranceway garage door or roof and exterior of house or yard. Prizes include first second and third plaques in each category. Entries accepted until 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Chamber of Commerce office 302 Liberty St. Old-Saw-New-Teeth.
