Wide Weather Divide Across Nation as 70s Hit the East

Boston reached a December record of 70 degrees while southern New England enjoyed sun. Meanwhile the central and western regions faced subzero readings in North Dakota and a cold snap in the Rockies with zero to 30 below. A Mississippi Valley storm was forecast to bring several inches of snow from Missouri to Michigan.

Weather bulletin from the U S Weather Bureau notes snow likely over the weekend beginning today and lasting through tonight. Several inches may accumulate as temperatures settle around 28 to 35 degrees. East German family flees to West Berlin under gunfire

An East German couple and their three children crossed the border into West Berlin Friday in a predawn dash through three barbed wire fences. Guards fired from a watchtower and bunker as the family, ages 37 for both parents and children aged 7 10 and 18, escaped with minor wounds from rusted wire.

Sixth Woman Strangled in Cincinnati

In Cincinnati a sixth woman in a year was found strangled in an elevator of a near downtown apartment building. Lula Kerrick, 80, lived alone on the fourth floor and was last seen at 7 a.m. at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. A 29-year-old man was detained on probation violation charges. police said he is not yet a prime suspect. The case prompts fears and notes of increased gun sales and chain door locks.

Gunmen rob cafeteria during lunch in Des Plaines

Three gunmen robbed a Des Plaines cafeteria where about 500 people were eating. They seized between 3000 and 4000 dollars from two Thillens Cashing Service employees. An armored truck had left a cashier and guard at City Products Corp as the raid unfolded.

Campaign Begins in Rural Grundy County United Fund

Brake system blamed for CTA train derailment in Chicago

CTA board president George Dement blamed an emergency braking system for the derailment that killed two and injured 26. Debris from a 150 pound strip was found near the derailment curve as the eighth car fell 25 feet and the seventh hung over the ground. Cook County coroner Dr. Andrew Toman said a blue ribbon inquest is set for January 11 with experts in railroad operation.

Jack Ruby rushed to Parkland Hospital with pneumonia

Dallas AP Jack Ruby the Oswald killer was admitted to Parkland Hospital with a serious pneumonia case after a week of a stubborn cold. Dr John Callahan said the illness was a nervous cough with no fever and Ruby had been on antibiotics for three days. Sheriff Decker said isolation would be used and visitors would be limited.
