U S B52 bombers hit a Viet Cong jungle base 25 miles northwest of Saigon launching a new clearance campaign around the capital. A second raid targeted a supply base 25 miles west of Chu Lai as casualties shift in Vietnam.
Pope Paul VI said the path to peace in Vietnam could open by uniting the Christmas and Vietnamese New Year truces into a single armistice. He urged both sides to join the truces, warn of danger if opportunities are missed, and prayed the idea gains momentum during the Immaculate Conception Mass at St Peter's.
State's Attorney Richard Wilder announced that the county treasurer's books will be open to public inspection under state law. Powerful winds from a storm in central Illinois caused trees to fall and buildings to suffer roof and structure damage. No injuries were reported as the tornado touched down near Mattoon and Assumption, uprooting trees, toppling a cattle barn roof, damaging a church steeple, and damaging a warehouse and plant roof. Power outages lasted about two and a half hours. Authorities estimated winds at 65 mph with heavy rain and lightning.

Mayor and Mrs. Aage Hansen depart December 15 for a 21 day trip to Denmark. They will fly from O'Hare to Copenhagen December 15 and return January 6 by plane. They plan to visit Mrs Hansen's father and the mayor's brother along with other relatives in Copenhagen. It has been 13 years since their last visit.
