Swiss Ambassador Kidnapped in Rio by National Liberation Alliance

Swiss Ambassador Giovanni Enrico Bucher was abducted in Rio de Janeiro by terrorists using automatic weapons after a car ambush near his Santa Teresa residence. A guard was wounded as six assailants, including a blonde woman, seized the envoy and his briefcase while leaflets identified the group.

Environmental Law Society Seeks Intervention in Dresden Unit 3 Hearing

The Illinois Pollution Control Board hearing on Commonwealth Edison Dresden Unit No 3 permit began this morning in the First National Bank building basement. Hearing officer Richard Kissel granted a petition to intervene presented by the Environmental Law Society.

Eight Morris alderman petitions filed for 1971 election

Eight men have taken out petitions to run for Morris alderman in the 1971 race. Names listed include Charles Spivey and Del Linn in First Ward, Donald Barkley and George Malek in Second Ward, Ray Younger in Third Ward, Arden Chapple and Jerry Borens in Fourth Ward, plus David Sklut. Filing opens December 16.

County Officers Sworn In Move Drenched in Crowded Aid

A large crowd gathered for the oath ceremony as county officers were sworn in and had to relocate from the first floor to the second floor.

Ticket Driver After Accident on Bridge

A 22-year-old Minooka man was ticketed for driving under the influence and wrong lane usage after a head on collision on the Illinois 47 river bridge Sunday at 3 45 pm. Gerald L Unland 22 of Rio 2 Minooka was scheduled to appear in magistrate court Dec 21. He posted a 50 cash bond and his license. Three passengers in the other car Ann M DeMarco 23 Julia DeMarco 59 and Frankie DeMarco 1 Joliet were treated and released at Morris Hospital. The other driver Francis A DeMarco 26 Joliet was not injured. Police reported Unland southbound and the other vehicle damaged.

Ford Deadline Dropped as UAW Talks Continue

The United Auto Workers dropped a midnight strike deadline against Ford Motor Co after 24 hours of talks to negotiate a new contract for 166,000 workers. The Ford Council will reconvene at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with much paperwork completed but a key issue on retroactivity still unsettled. The union seeks retroactive raises similar to GM and a larger first year increase, while Ford offered 26 cents retroactive for the last 60 days.

Board to Discuss School Finances at 7 P.M.

The Morris Grade School Board of Education will discuss the district's general financial condition at the 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting in Franklin School. Also on the agenda are sidewalk and crushed rock placement, water softener recommendations for Shabbona School, and consideration of an open house at Shabbona.

Inmates Sell Christmas Crafts From Dwight Reformatory

Inmates at the Illinois Reformatory for Women at Dwight offer Christmas tree ornaments candles corsages and wreaths for sale to the public for the first time. Goods are displayed at The Lodge in Dwight under James H. Oughton Jr and Mrs Peter Scully with Harriet Hottman in charge of the greenhouse. Proceeds go to the Inmate Benefit Fund for recreational equipment and inmate amenities.

Ten Candidates For Police Jobs In Morris

Frank Welch of the Morris Police Commission announced ten candidates who took the examination for fulltime or parttime police officers at Morris Community High School. The Morris residents are Steven Francois, Richard Chapell, Gerald Steele, Ronald Fagg, Jerry Lanier, Jerry Murphy, Thomas Sparrow, Harold Lenser, Robert Johnson and Paul Anderson. They must attend oral interviews before the Police Commission before recommendations to the judiciary committee of Morris City Council.
