Wisconsin brothers to provide White House Christmas tree

A 20 foot Blue Spruce grown by George and Cal Frelk of Morris Illinois will be the President's White House Tree during the 1969 holiday season. The tree from Merrillan Wisconsin will be cut by Governor Warren Knowles in a ceremony and shipped to Washington D C. The Frelks 1970 Christmas tree champions of the National Christmas Tree Growers Association were selected to supply the White House tree.

Drug Use High Among Vietnam Army Troops

Army psychiatrists told a Senate subcommittee that in Vietnam more than half of polled enlisted men may have used marijuana at least once and about one in six are habitu al users smoking 200 times or more a year. Opium use tripled among troops in Vietnam versus before deployment. The survey by Capt. Morris D. Stanton covered 2372 personnel at Cam Ranh Bay in November 1969, with 994 outgoing soldiers showing 53.2 percent having tried marijuana.

Soldier Testifies Calley Ordered My Lai Fire

A machinegunner in Lt. William Calley’s platoon testified that Calley ordered civilians into a ditch at My Lai, where they were shot. The witness, Robert Maples, said he refused to shoot and that Calley asked him to use his weapon. Other soldiers corroborated hearing shots at the ditch as the case nears rest.

Driver Killed Near Bonfield in Three-Vehicle Crash

Robert Charles, 28, of Bonfield died Tuesday in a three vehicle crash on Illinois 17 west of Kankakee. Police say Donald Freeman of rural Kankakee stopped to turn left, was struck from behind by Charles, and his car was hit by a second truck.

Des Plaines doctor charged with assault and explosives

Des Plaines sheriff raided a clinic, arresting Dr James Middleton 44. He faces deviate sexual assault charges for alleged drugging of female patients and counts of possession of explosives and unlawful use of a weapon. Middleton bonded at 15 000, with December 29 hearing set.

Heckler Disrupts Ky Speech During San Francisco Visit

County Petit Jury Panel Dismissed

Grundy County circuit court petit jurors were dismissed shortly after 1 30 p m Tuesday after six days of session. One case went to trial 17 settled 17 passed or continued and three for which jury demands were withdrawn. Circuit Judge Leonard Hoffman presided. Session began in November.
